What's the consensus on video file types?

I have ripped some of my DVDs to VOB (c.2GB each) and then want to play them on my netbook when travelling (software can handle most types)
Looking for a fast conversion, reasonable conversion, not super quality required. What should I be looking at avi? divx?
    and any favourite conversion programmes?

    cheers
