As per the title really. Trying to help a mate out, who’s pub bike is knackered, by giving it a spruce up.

the (8spd) rear mech is shot but i have a spare x9 mech in the parts box and some deore 9 spd shifters + a 9 speed shimano cassette. Can I combine these and will it shift smoothly or are mech/shifters of different makes not compatible?

    thanks

Nope, shimano shifters won’t work with SRAM mechs.

It’ll shift, but you wont get all the gears, or even most of them.

The amount of cable a SRAM and Shimano lever pulls in is different, and the amount needed to shift their mechs to the spacing on the cassette thus differs.

Singlespeed for pub bike – sorted.

Should be able to pick up a Shimano rear mech pretty cheap I’d have thought.

I’m pretty sure an Acera 8 speed will work with 9 speed just as well and CRC have them for less than 20 quid.
