    Hi there,

I have a mountain bike with an old 8 speed xtr group set. I need to replace the cassette and wonder If I can fit a 10 speed one without having to change anything else. Would like to change other components but don’t have the money at the moment.

    Cheers

No. The overall width of the cassette is the same so the gaps between each cog are narrower on the 10. It won’t work

As above. You could put a 7 speed one on and fit a spacer as the sprocket spacing is the same as 8 speed so the whole cassette is narrower. You’d just need to limit the mech using the limit adjust screws..

All a bit complicated though when you could just get another 8 speed one.

    Less than a tenner:-

^ What I bought and fitted to my skinny wheelset, 11-30.

There is something like a HG50 variant, but it is ~2x the price and I’d hazard a guess it is not twice as good.
