Went to the hospital in the early hours of the morning, for what turned out to be a chest infection.

Any way as part of the diagnosis they hooked me up to a heart rate monitor, and the nurse got in a bit of flap when my resting rate was low 40s and even went as low as 36. I’d say I’m reasonably fit , but certainly no athlete and the doctor at the hospital said it’s nothing to worry about.

A bit of google work also say’s its nothing to worry about, but It still concerns me a bit.

Anyone on hear have the same? And has it affected you in any way?

    What was your blood pressure?

Any dizziness, headaches, blackouts or loss of energy?

People have varying heart rates for many reasons, if you’re showing no ill effects then chances are it’s fine. Did they do an ECG?

Nah I am regulary about 50 just at my desk & can be less at rest, does give the nurse a 2nd look though everytime I have had a hospital check..

I am no athlete. I am not even fit.

Now I’m worried about it for you too. The stress has actually raised my HR.

i’d be worried, one day it’ll stop beating and then where will you be?

    dead, that’s where.

Take it from somebody with a 25m swimming certificate, at some point in the future, you’ll die 😐

Sounds like your batteries need changing.

Insert five D-cells into an appropriate orifice and see if that raises your heart rate any 😉

I’ve always had a low resting heart rate coupled with a lower than average body temperature. Resting rate varies between 35 and 40, always been the same. Usually causes puzzled looks during any medical procedure but has never caused me any problems and it’s never been suggested that it’s anything to worry about. Why not keep a check for a couple of weeks see if this is a normal heat rate for you?

I had a bit of a problem about 10 years ago. My resting heart rate was very low (low 30s), I guess due to the amount of training I’d done then a bit of a change in lifestyle and a bit of work related stress and I had periods where my heart rate would plunge down into the late teens and I was fainting all over the place including frustratingly after an alcoholic drink. Got to wear some funky heart monitor gubbins for a few days which showed nothing daft then a couple of weeks signed off work taking it easy and it slowly went away. Bit scary for a week or two though.

If no symptoms just keep and eye and pester if there are any issues.

…pester if there are any issues…

    Key phrase there.
It’s unlikely to be an issue if you’ve not had any problems. Seek help if dizzy/giddy/AIDS.

I forgot, I also had a number of concerned friends, family and training partners ask me if I wanted to confide in them about having taken performance enhancing drugs – made me smile! Not on the EPO are you? 😉

Had something similar years ago – thought it meant all the training was working and I was the next Miguel Indurain.

Told my sisters who lol’d, said they had the same as did my dad. None of them trained. That’s my sisters for you always weeing on my bonfire…

I once got taken to hospital in an ambulance (i had a dizzy spell at work and ended up lying on the floor throwing up into my waste paper bin).

They hooked me up in the ambulance and the lady in there got worried about my low heart rate (I was doing a lot of Muay Thai and BJJ, and cycling a lot at the time).

There was a cycling paramedic (the ones on the MTBs), he said his was low too as he’s fit (physically rather than looks).

    So was he ugly then?

Blood pressure and everything else was fine and no dizzy spells, or tiredness.

Some further googling suggests I could have heart disease, may need Thyroid hormone therapy or possibly a pace maker!

I’m going to stop now before google also tells me i have cancer, AIDS and Ebola.

Cheers for the replies guys, i’m off to ride my bike before i die….

Not sure…I didn’t fancy him, but I haven’t fancied men since I discovered my older brothers porn stash and realised what girls were for.

It’s ok McHamish… you don’t have to be homosexual to know whether someone is ugly or not… let’s play a game…

So you mean you fancied men when you were young, but then learnt to hide it by social convention? … interesting. Take a seat.

Now, how would you describe your relationship with your mother?

Ex international rower I knew had a resting heart rate of 28 or so. When he went for an operation under general it was down to 18 apparently – kept setting off the alarms 😯

It’s nothing to worry about in itself.
