Just has a call from the SO who went off for the day in the car (02 Golf SE TDi), to say the coil symbol has been flashing at her for the 30 mins she has been driving. Manual says it needs checked by a VW dealer. Is it going to be bad…? Its been needing a service for about 2k miles, too.

I want my R reg 106 1.1i back. Life was simple.

You need to plug it in to a laptop & run a program called VAGCOM, if you join a VW forum you can find someone in your area that’ll do it for a pint!
Where are you? I’m in North Devon & have VAGCOM if you are close.

That is the normal “problem” sign on VW’s. Dealer or someone with VAG diagnostic stuff/leads etc. Could be anything, but one thing I know of on Skoda’s/VW is that if both rear brake light bulbs are out-or the brake light switch is knackered which is a common problem the light comes on( something to check)

Off and running on the VWAUDI forum. Looking for VAGCOM (sounds like Porn technology…) nearby but have a recommended garage if not.

    Thanks

I once took a second hand saab out for a test drive, I got 3 miles away from the garage and loads of lights came on, ABS, hazard, airbag, all sorts, it was like a christmas tree. So I tentatively drove back, got to the garage and said “WTF!? look at this!!” and the bloke nonchalantly said “oh don’t worry about that, we’ll just plug it into the laptop and turn them all off again”.

I practically ran out of that garage!!

probably flashing because you have ignored the service light for 2000 miles, got to do something to get you attention.

for all modern VW group cars it’s the laptop route, anything pre 98 i thing is as clever 5 handed 4 feet trick with indicators, pedals and ignition

    I’ve got VAGCOM + the necessary lead, unfortunately I don’t think you’re anywhere near Surrey/Hants ?

    Try this,

With ignition switched off press and hold the trip reset button. Switch ignition on and release the reset button. Turn the knob to reset the minutes on the clock to the right and the display should return to normal.

Check your brake lights. The switch on the pedal breaks quite easily and the car gets confused if it thinks you’re driving without using the brakes.

Probably an iffy brake light switch. Mine does it periodically.

The reason the switch breaks is often down to the pedal stop being bent or missing.

Yep had the same, dodgy brake light switch, local garage took about 5 mins to fix with no charge, they reckon its common?!
