    Killed on Everest apparently..

I never though he’d make old bones, but boy could he climb. His Eiger speed ascent was mind-blowing……

That the fella that could nail the eiger in a couple of hours?.

Incredible guy, it’s a cliche but at least he was in a worthy place when he departed….

The team has collected the scattered parts of the climber’s body.

I’m assuming that’s just a bad translation on that site….

I just saw the news, very sad. Was one of the few that non climbers really admired and I’ve had various friends just be blown away by the Swiss machine.

I am very much a non-climber (afraid of heights) but I have huge respect for him, he was an all-round mountain and outdoor person.

    Prophetic Quote

Asked what he would consider to be success on his expedition, Steck told Tages-Anzeiger: “Of course I want to climb Everest and Lhotse. But that’s a very high goal. Failure for me would be to die and not come home.”

    An inspiration.

I read White Spider a couple of years ago. I wondered how fast climbers did it now thinking it was probably down from 6 days to three or four days.

Quite a shock to find it was being done in a couple of hours – and you could watch a real time vid of it.

I suspect deep down these kind of adventurers are well aware they aren’t likely to die in am Old Peoples Home.

RIP, thanks for blowing my mind.

outofbreath – ‘ thanks for blowing my mind’

    Very Accurate and nicely said!

I have always liked this quote from him:
“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.”
