why does everyone have to snipe at people who want to do Llandegla?? It's one of the best trail centres in the UK, the track is impeccably maintained and the facilities are A1. Yes it's a 'manufactured' trail but it does a great job of giving people somewhere to ride, try new skills and is pretty predictable in all weathers.
I got into MTB'ing 18 months ago and I used to go there weekly and the first time I went I could barely do the blue route without vomitting and I soon built up my fitness which it's great for. Yes the halfords massif get there on their £99 bikes but my first bike was £300 and now have £6k worth so maybe Llandegla is the first rung on the ladder for MTB'ers??
The first 2.5 miles are a long manageable drag but then it depends on which route. The blue which is actually quite entertaining is a deffo on an SS, the red route has 'the double steep' which has most geared riders pushing up and there's a few smaller ones near the end which would be challenging.
The Black route continually descends (via lots of berms, table tops etc
) to the bottom of the forrest and then there is some climbing back out via switchbacks, but manageable if your fit enough. Personally I'd go geared.......
with regards to tyres, don't worry about mud, there isn't any at all, the surface will be wet in lots of places but the whole trail is really hard underneath and drains really well. They've re-laid the trails in lots of places and it's very smooth at the minute even when wet. It didn't trouble me on ardent and crossmark set up
