Any bargains out there? For talking between guides leading MTB trips. Waterproof would be ideal.

Or is it a matter of buying the best motorola units you can afford?

Regardless of what you buy they are all limited on the power output.
I’ve tried a few whilst snowboarding.
Motorola were generally the best as were some doro cheapies from currys.
They are all line of sight, I’ve had ranges from 5km and working fine to 200mtrs and nothing.
Imo there not a substitute for a mobile but quite handy for local chat.

We use the Baofeng radios from Ebay with ear pieces and PTT switches. Cheap enough that if they get trashed you just buy a new one and programmable for various different frequencies.

when do you need them for ? I have a set of radios, earpieces at home that have never been used and are taking up space in the cupboard.

    EDIT:

I can’t remember the make, but do remember that I got a Ham friend to pick out the best that we could find at the time.

What I have is the following:

    1 Maxon S1 Car Charger
1 Maxon S1 Twin Pack Radios
    2 Maxon S1 Belt Clip
2 Maxon S1 Earpice with boom mic and PTT

+1 for Baofeng. Batteries last, good range and nicely cheap. Replaced all of our Motorola XTN with them.

No hurry, what do you want for them?

They were £120 and have never been used, but are no longer in their boxes, so £60 plus postage.

I am back in the UK in Mid September, or could post them from here ( Holland ) if you wanted them sooner.

If you’re interested I’ll get them out of the cupboard and give them a check this evening.

Thank cranberry but I think if spending that much I’ll probably go new.

Tell me this, if (for example) a Motorola T41 (Up to 4 km) and T61 (Up to 8 km) are both 500 mW, what gives the difference in range…. better antenna??
