I think films that Tarantino have a hand in get it right, e.g.:

Have to agree about Gary Oldman…..

…most excellent in Leon. Very sinister.

There is a good reason the film of Lemony Snicket died on it’s arse.

    That is the culprit.

In addition to TiRed’s suggestion, every character in these films is spot on, but especially Buzz.

There is a difference between good casting and good acting.

Cumberbatch in Sherlock is good casting, he is a rather irritating self absorbed posh sounding tosspot, very far from being a good actor but spot on for the Sherlock’s persona.

Gary Oldman on the other hand has played many great characters over the years, that can be put down to acting ability.

I think films that Tarantino have a hand in get it right,

Uma Thurman has ruined several of his films.

Tilda Swinton in anything that involves being bonkers

Yeah, but not just bonkers, unsettling and unworldly bonkers. Her angel definitely wasn’t people, by the end.

Triggered by the mention of Constantine (a better film than it gets credit for).

Definitely a triumph of casting over acting. Can’t think of anyone else with the same perfect (for the role) mix of blankness and slight bemusement.

SImiliarly, Matt Damon in the first Bourne film- always looks totally surprised at what just happened. It’s a gift he has.

Keanu Reeves in Pointbreak. Who else could possibly play a stoned, dropout, surfer dude with such gravitas? He makes the doors seem animated.

    Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast

Another case of an actor nailing the part rather than great casting.

Disagree. He certainly did nail it but whoever did the casting had to have seen what he could bring to the role.
