Can a triple front road SIS shifter be used with a double road chainset?

    Thanks.

    Usually, yes.

I have used an Ultegra triple STI with a compact and it was ok. I would keep an eye out for an double s/h shifter if you are doing it long term, but if you are swaping back and fourth it would be ok.

Depends which model but my 105’s were fine and my old ultegras can IIRC if that helps? But the new ones are double/triple specific – what model – look them up on shimano tech docs if they are shimano of course 😉

    What Al says.

I have Ultegra 6600 STIs. L/H shifter is Triple specific (6600 was sold as triple specifc or double specific). I swapped a triple chainset for a standard double (with a compact double for those big days in the hills).

Shifter works fine, although I did need a double specific front mech. I set the shifter to use the granny for the inner ring, and middle position for the outer ring. Overshifting is blocked in the usual way via the f/mech limit screws.
