  • Trans Pennine Trail – Warrington to Liverpool Airport – doable on a road bike?

Just planning a route for tomorrow and was wondering what the surface of the Trans Pennine Trail was like along the Mersey / canal between the west of Warrington (joining it from the A49 or thereabouts) and Liverpool.

I've done the bit to the west of the Runcorn bridge, and though there's a bit of shale before you get to Hale village, it's none so bad, and doesn't trash your 23c tyres if you take it easy – I just can't work out from Google maps etc what the surface is going to be like on the section before that.

Thanks in advance for any advice. 🙂

Cool – thanks erny – what sort of surface is it? From the Runcorn Bridge, it's tarmac, but from the website, they do say that some if it's more stony / shale. What's the navigation like as well in your experience? Cheers.
