    Hi All,
    Am determined to get on slightly longer rides than my recent norm. I'm also aware I'm prone to bonking, so need to keep sugar levels up.
    I've found Natural Harvest Granola Bars are really good, touch of sweetness and filling, and hit my spot!
    Following some of the recent nutrition articles, am trying to top up every hour, and it seems to work, so that's another help.

    Do Jelly Babies/Haribo's also work, or is it a myth?
    … what do other trail nibblers use?

    Just wondering, as toasting toes before the fire!!

    I like proper food on the trail not sugary stuff you usually get, on epic rides you really do notice the difference, after 6 hours my legs groan if i don't throw down some protein.

    Trek bars.
    Nakd bars.
    Power bar ride.

    For something sugary hmm as said jelly babies are a personal favourite but clif shot bloks are great go fodder.

    found "american gums" or something like that in the Co-op. Veggie and a few of them keep me going longer. That and caffeine torq gels which are better than viagra for staying power 😯

    Sweets are great for a quick sugar lift but if you judge it wrong the down slope of the sugar spike can be nasty.

    I like Frusli bars, Aldi's flapjack, Soreen Go bars. I've got in the habit of having a small mouth full and a couple of slugs of drink to wash it down every 15 minutes or so to keep me going.

    I really rate Clif Shot Bloks as an alternative to the sugary sweets by the way.

    And – obviously – all long rides involve a journey to a decent cafe and back…

    Flapjacks and Jelly Babies are the shizzle, innit. REAL JB's though, not those white sick wearing Aldi prole versions…. 🙂

    oh, and fig rolls. Also roadie reckons the pumpkin seed bars from Holland and Barrat are good but not tried them.

    love clif bloks, also clif and mule bars.
    homemade 'after eight' flapjack.
    I carb up with SIS drinks too, PSP works well on route.

    My staple ride food consists of banana, dried apricots, Nutrigrain oat bake bars, Sainsburys cookies and my new favourite Rowntree's Randoms

    Plus I shove a Nuun tube under the bottom of my Camelbak bladder so if I do start feeling any cramp and can pop a tablet into the bladder.

    just making up a shopping list for next supermarket hit!
    Will include Jelly Babies, and a list of the bars mentioned, plus dried fruit. That seems to be a good one……

    I'm from that part of the world, so understand, but not sure my digestive system will cope with them + big hills, and Rennes in my camelbak is a bit embarrassing!

    Errr…. 'nuun tube' ??? whazzat?
    ….cos I went out for a trip with mates a couple of weeks ago and did start to cramp, embarrassingly, and painfully.

    Stop cramp fast, one normally works although they say put one tablet per 500ml, taste nice and the tough tube can be shoved in the bottom of the bladder section of your camelbak and forgotten about until needed.

    My trailside food consists of

    Bananas
    snack size mars bar

    emergency food stuff
    real jelly babies – instant sugar boost
    dried dates – slow burning energy source

    I prefer not to eat snacks but just bring along a home-made sandwich for lunchtime. Egg and cress/salad has protein and is easy to digest.

    Keep an emergency energy bar in my backpack. Can recommend Blackfriars flapjacks which come in loads of different flavours, are substantial and cheap at around 70p from Holland & Barrett.

    A few dried apricots, organic are best cos there's no sulphate preservative to cause, erm, tummy ache.

    Malt loaf, whatever cereal bars are on offer in the supermarket, bananas, homemade flapjack, homemade carrot cake or wholefood 9bars if you want something with protein and bulk (too much (or only) sugar after 6hours makes me feel sick).

    Nuke: thanks for the link. sounds like a good thing for me.

    CG/jonb: think you both have a point – sometimes it's 'food' not necessarily sugar stuff that I need. Will take a look around the health food shops as well as supermarket when in town.
    Crispy's reminded me – I like dried dates!
