Anyone recommend any 700C touring tyres? Not sure what the ideal size is; these look quite good as may venture off road occasionaly,

    I like Schwalbe Dureme http://www.schwalbe.co.uk/c2-1277-schwalbe-tires-marathon-dureme.html

Currently have these in 35c fitted to my Vaya, if looking for a more off road tire, would look at the Marathon Extreme, got my Dureme’s from Rose http://www.rosebikes.co.uk/article/schwalbe-marathon-dureme-evo-hd-ceramic/aid:409204

Saying that have off gone off for a few miles (by accident) on 23c Ultremo’s in the dry, and they worked well 😛

I use Pasela’s in 28c for good roads on solos and tandems. Fantastic. If rough stuff, either Paselas up to 38c or Schwalbe Marathons. Used the Marathon XR expedition tyres that are a) very tough and b) very heavy and c) very, very expensive.

How much offroad are you actually planning to do? It’s suprising where even a 23mm slick will take you off road. If I were touring africa I’d think about something aimed at tackling the dirt, but in Europe I’d take a more road orientated tyre with lower rolling resistance.
I’ve used Marathon’s before, cheap, fairly puncture resistant and seem to last well.

I got mine from Rose, as they were the only people with the 2011 versions in, back in November, also they are the folding version, most of the ones you see in the UK for the same price are steel bead.

Although Rose managed to make a mess of my last order, would order from them again, they currently have free postage, and seem to be generous with sending out vouchers.

For going off road on a 23mm, I only did this as I ended up on a trail I couldn’t get off, would want at least 28mm if planning for any dirt, 35mm+ if carrying panniers.

If looking for something cheap, what about these http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/TYSCSAMSW/schwalbe-sammy-slick-wired-tyre @ £9.99

I use a 28mm tyres on my road tourer that does rough stuff. In this case Panaracer Tserv Messengers.

I think a lot of tourers go for tyres that are too heavy, because they wish they were cycling the Mongolian plateau rather than South Uist.

I am a big fan of those conti tyres – the puncture protection works well, not too heavy and a wee bit of knobble for offroad

Conti travel contacts are a revelation! So versatile, as TJ hinted! 🙂
I’ve been running them all over this winter with no problems/offs at all. Adapt you riding style to realistic expectations of grip when offroad and you will be fine. On road they just roll.
