Hey Singletrackers, I shredded the side wall of a 2.25 Nobby Nick on rather nice piece of West Sussex singletrack today.

What are your thoughts on a tougher alternative 2.25 (ish) inch width rear tyre for a 29er? I have a Hans Dampf 2.35 on the front end but that’s a bit heavy and draggy for a rear tyre.

    Thanks for reading. 😀

On-One Smorgasbord 2.25. Cheap, tough and grippy.

Go with a nobby nic with snakeskin sidewalls

Smorgasbord, as above. Great tyre, and cheaper than chipped tubers.

    2.2 Trail King protection

    EDIT

I have Smorgasbord and I don’t think it is much like a NN

+ 1 3 Smorg. On both my 29er hardtail and 26er full susser I’m running Hans Dampf front & Smorg rear, all tubeless

One of the specialised tyres, the tougher grid carcass.

Another vote for the Smorgasbord, I wouldn’t consider anything else these days, very tough and a great all rounder

Trail King 2.2 Protection Apex – it has a partially stiffened sidewall (near the bead) like a DH tyre, but rest of carcass is standard Protection. Not cheap, but very good.

Just ripped my TK. right near the bead. Not impressed by the durability. Only ridden it about 10 times. Seen a couple of other cuts in it while looking for the hole.

An apex protection? Any tyre can be ripped but that sounds like bad luck they make EXO sidewalls look flimsy.

EXOs aren’t that tough. I’ve split too many. Conti Protections have fared better but I’ve just bought some Vigilante toughs from bike24 so we’ll see how they go…

Thanks Gang. I’ll give the Smorg a go. If it turns out to be a mistake, at least it will have been a cheap(ish) one.
