It’s difficult to make a bike look good when it’s designed for what (most of) they are.
When you look at them in the context of general purpose trips and even special events like the Oregon Outback etc. the choices make more sense and the functional aspects can be impressive even if not ‘beautiful’
This hooks into the CX/Gravel thread that’s also running at the mo, a lot of very ‘all purpose bicycles’ popping up, funny how they are being described as niche* when they really are anything but, it’s the highly specific MTB and road race bikes that are the niche machines tuned for a specific purpose, where as this is going back to bikes designed to carry people and kit over a wide variety of terrain and be highly adaptable, and similar to a lot of what of people all over the world actually use their bikes for, it’s only they fact they aren’t focussed on by the popular media that means people think they are odd.
There are a couple of obvious concessions in there though like the commuter at the top and the pure road race bikes.
* as in a highly specialised *something*, just because MTBs and Road bikes are popular doesn’t make them not-specialised for their task, and of course doesn’t mean that a lot of people are riding popular bikes that are totally unsuited to most of their actual riding.
