Following on from the thread here, and given that most are saying Birmingham isn’t in the top ten, where is?

My list, in no real order and based on places I have visited rather than those I’ve read about (yes, there are a couple of towns in there but hell, I like them):
    1. San Diego
    2. Melbourne
    3. Charleston
    4. Rome
    5. London
    6. Grenoble
    7. San Francisco
    8. Queenstown
    9. Christchurch
    10. Vancouver.

Hmmm, I don’t like cities as a rule.

I understand that Melbourne and Vancouver are meant to be some of the best, but frankly I hated Melbourne, it’s actually just like Birmingham but with Trams (does Brum have Trams?) a lot of old Victorian buildings surrounded by lots of 60’s grey concrete. I should add I had a bad time in Melbourne and found myself homeless for a few days which’ll take the shine of most places.

I found Vancouver to be pretty ugly too, there are beggars everywhere, it’s all very grey and dull – the suburbs are where it’s at.

    I like:

Sydney – bright, bustling, with lots to see and stunning scenery.

Barcelona – prettiest city I’ve ever visited, great nightlife that doesn’t involve binge drinking and violence.

Prague is nice too, or was at least 10 years ago, I’ve heard the little bit that was full of strip bars and whatnot is massive now.

Varna in Bulgaria is like Prague without the seedy bits.

Tokyo is mental, and just keep going and going – I actually took a 747 from Osaka to Tokyo – it was a 45 min flight from memory – London to Manchester-ish – the two cities are so large they actually touch in the middle!

You’d put London above Vancouver? You’re nuts.

To quote what I wrote above my list:

My list, in no real order

So yes I wrote London before Vancouver but that was not a ranking.

I’ve been a dozen or so times, but it’s been a while.

    hmmm

There’s best as in objectively best according to some criteria, related to quality of life for most people, or whatever you want. Or there’s best as in places I’d like to live right now. Of places I’ve been probably:

    Barcelona
    San Sebastian
    Biaritz

Mountains, sea and a better climate. San Francisco or somewhere in northern California would probably hit the same sort of spot, but I’ve never been.

I lived for a year in Istanbul, which was great then, but it’s just too far to go for surf/climbing etc. Likewise London’s great (there 14 years and most weeks) but same applies.

Berlin’s great but a bit bloody landlocked and not a world city like London. Never got the hang of Paris. Edinburger’s a brilliant place but climate rules it out.

I’d give New York a go.

Another vote for San Diego, love the place.
But New York surely deserves a mention?
Would also vote for the craziness that is Hong Kong and the relatively sterile Singapore.
Closer to home, I could never tire of Rome, closer still…….Liverpool!

    In no particular order:

    Prague
    Oslo
    Stockholm
    Valencia
    Budapest
    Bristol
San Ignacio (stretching the limits of a city though as it’s pretty small and as a city it’s not great, it just acts as a place to stay to get to amazing places)
San Francisco (though I haven’t been there since 1993 so it might be guff now)
    Berlin
    Vienna

I thought I’d like Vancouver but also thought it was full of beggars.

    Top ten would be

    Oslo
    London
    Newcastle upon Tyne
    San Francisco
    New York
    Paris
    Berlin
    Tel aviv
    Reykjavik
That city in southern Spain south of Malaga

They do say you cant like Sydney and Melbourne, its one or the other, for me hated Sydney but had the best time in Melbourne.

I thought Oslo was great but ruinously expensive 🙁

Hanoi is incredible, Tokyo is on my bucket list.
