went to Dentist on Tuesday, and had 3 teeth out one broken,, Thursday lots of pain , rang the emergency dental number, and got another Dentist, he prescribed antibiotics, took about 5 so far, the pain comes as waves deeply penetrating , upper jaw, and behind eye, takeing anti biotics relieves pain after a few hours, then it comes back again.
Any advice.

max doses of ibufrofen and paramol, as well as the antibiotics. The antibiotics will get it down in a few days, he other stuff is for the pain (this was the advice i was given by a dentist and the nurses on the local dental emergency line, I had one show itself in december, 3 days before i flew to Australia! thankfully the above meant i was sorted by the time i flew)

If you're in a serious amount of pain don't put it off, call the emergency dental service again and explain the symptoms, they may be able to give you some kind of jab or amputate?
nothing worse than dental pain, (I have a tooth infection at the moment too!)

go to dentist and cry. Shouldn't be hard by the sound of it or try casulty and refuse to move until you get some decent painkillers. I had something similar and crappy stuff like dihydro codeine (sp?) did not do a thing. Ended up with Temgesic which is morphine. It worked and allowed me to sleep, relax and stop playing with the abscess and it could heal. Try cold as you can bear water on it and spit it out when warm. Don't swallow as you will be pissing clear in a matter of hours. 1 night I went through 7 gallons! of water and "slept" by the bath.

Yeah, done that. I cried like a girl for three days (we were on a skiing holiday when it started
). Got home and a doctor friend gave me something from her medicine cabinet. Coproxamol - serious shit, but did the job until I could get proper treatment. It was withdrawn, with an amount of publicity, a short time later due to dangers of overdosing and toxicity when mixed with alcohol. Still got some in the cupboard

Co prox good stuff. Had plenty in the family in those days. didn't ouch my abcess hence the morphine. That was the worst pain ever suffered. Busted leg, nothing, ribs in pieces, nothing, no cartlidge in knee, nowt, 10 miles off road m/c riding with dislocated shoulder. No. Bad tooth does it everytime.

get some sea salt, about 2 tablespoons and dissolve into a large glass of quite warm water. then get a mouthfull and swish around especially on the abcess area. repaet until all gone, and do more glasses 3 or 4 times a day. relieves discomfort and helps heal.
in between, get some cloved and pop about 2 or 3 in your mouth and keep them on top of the tooth where the abcess is. just keep them in there as long as you can, at least 30mins to an hour. sounds crazy, but it really helps (got it from an old living off the land book).
finally, have some tcp and dab a little onto the abcsess three times a day.
believe me, the stuff above works, and in the future can help prevent a full blown abscess forming again.

Yep that's what dentists have told me to do. Ordinary salt works fine too.
Not sure about the other stuff though - I'd rather rely on the antibiotics.

Oww, I feel it from here. I have a scar on my chin from where the abscess under my front teeth spat out the pus and crap when the dentist couldn't get at it from above. They used strong magnesium sulphate paste and that sucked it all through my skin. None of the painkillers I had then touched it, but at least it saved on injections at the dentist for getting it drilled as the pain from the drill wasn't likely to be as bad as what I was having anyway so she didn't bother. Took 2 full courses of antibiotics plus all of gavs advice to get a hold on it. Good luck.

Yep, salt water is the answer - cloves are good, too. (the dentis probably said sea salt as it tastes a little better)
Oh, and by the way, Temgesic doesn't contain morphine.

WARNING IF YOU ARE TAKING METRONIDAZOLE DO NOT TAKE ANY ALCOHOL OF ANY SORT.
I too was struck down with the swollen face abscess filled upper and lower jaw last week (one tooth rotten on top one on the bottom!). i was prescribed the above antibiotics with express instructions from emergency dentist and pharmacit as given apparantly alcohol with these anti biotics will literally send you loopy and end up with you in A&E.. The anti biotics took five days to work fully when the pain comes on as well as co codamol insterspersed with inbuprofen put a bag of frozen peas on the affected area for 20 mins. Another method of pain distraction if the toothache is one the right hold an ice cube between your right index finger and thumb and rub it till it melts. The pain fools the brain into ignoring your tooth pain!
Finally I found going out for a hard ride helped the pain in my legs distracted my brain from the toothache till five minutes after getting in the house then I was nearly in tears with it again.

Sympathy. I am on my 2nd abscess under the same tooth. Its no where near as bad as the first run as the nerve was removed for a root canal the first time. The first time was a living hell for several days.
Only thing I can think of to say is that be grateful its not a terminal disease and that the pain WILL stop eventually. When it hurts really badly, these thoughts seem much more valuable and worthwhile than they might seem to a casual reader on here.

Erm, I beg to differ. Tooth abscess can indeed be fatal if left untreated. In fact iirc, a couple of hundred years ago it was a major cause of death in the UK.
Even today, people living in backward countries with very poor health care facilities such as the United States, people may die of tooth abscesses :

Yes, I do realise it was in history, and perhaps in other countries, but the assumption is that the poster is most likely in the UK and it is implied s/he is receiving treatment. It would be really rotten luck in those circumstances to have the misfortune to die. It possible, but very unlikely. It not really the on the same terror scale as kidney or liver failure or terminal cancer or a brain tumour is it. I certainly hope not anyway as I am being treated for an abcess myself right now. I also survived the previous one I had, as have loads of people I know. Keeping the risks in proportion really helped me when I was curled up on the bed crying in pain 2 or 3 years ago.

Well lets say im a mature adult male, in age, but since before christmas ive been very short of breath get out of breath on the shortest of climbs, was diagnosed with iron deficency anaemia a few years ago Hg5.2, and had a blood transfusion, 4 units, recently ive been getting a sharpish pain in left lung, and a nagging pain below the belly button on the left hand side of my stomach and generally feel tired some days even wghen not doing anything, oh and i was fit last year.

After haveing toothache and a long chat with NHs direct, yesterday, and getting an emergency appointment at the drs, last night for shortness of breath, and chest pain, today the toothache was really bad so rang a dentist , who told me to ring central control, they then got me into a surgery and ive just had 3 teeth out, one was snapped in half, and another two where not quite right , so now ive still got toothache, and a massive hole in my gum, took some paracetemol, and still it hurts.The dentist didnt surpriseingly, very gentle.Posted 4 days ago # Report-Post

well I was up at five with toothache, I've consumed 1000mgs of paracetamol, would it be a particularly bad idea to go out riding?

Project - You've got whats called a dry socket, antibiotics will sort it out but if you are still having major probs ring the emergency number there's probably a clinic on today and you can get a dressing placed in the socket which will give quicker relief. Otherwise as long as you're fit and well, just painkillers - alternate ibuprofen and co codamol (provided no allergies to these, and no contra indications to either of them eg serious asthma and ibuprofen). Obviously read the packagaing and dont take more than the max dose. You can take ibuprofen and co-codamol together as they work differently and are chemically different. Best take one, then 2-3 hours later take the other. Salty mouthwashes as well (teaspoon salt in some water swill with that round the extraction site). No smoking as thats more likely to cause post op problems.
Mr Nutt - 1000mg is well within the safe daily dose for an adult so yeah ridings fine, but if you're in serious pain then find the local out of hours emergency number for your dentist / PCT. (usually on the answerphone at the dentist you go to)
The key question is though, have you both been good enough to get a sticker

Mr Nutt, no i havent, being a real man with a fear of dentits and have ing taken co codamol, and paracetemol today and a nti biotic, the pain is in recession, but above my eye and behind feels as if ive been hit by a brick, and strangely the tooth cavity is now healing over abnd not paining , just the rest of my mouth.
Remembered from when i was a child and use to have teeth out frequently by the dentist from hell, he always said go for a ice cream after haveing teeth out, cant remember if there was pain after, i was just terrified of him.

And there Project, lies the problem I fear - you try to avoid going to the dentist, and also avoid going to the doctor's when you have chest pains, preferring instead to ask punters on STW for their advise

Grizly gus, i was going to eventually go to the Drs about the chest pain and lack of energy, but the toothache came in first and it was NHS direct , who got everything sorted in a way, and [possibly caused a few more problems.
I work on the assumption a problem ignored is a major problem starting,strangely a gang of faceless people on a bike forum always seem to offer good advice and a laugh along the way, and best of all its free, unlike dental treatment, also where do you live grizly gus, you seem a really happy cheerful soul to have along at a samaratins meeting,
