I love my Soul but as I'm now 40 my back is getting sore while riding. I can't afford a full suss at the moment so will fitting a Ti post make any difference?

I'd buy one of 'those' Moots posts – cue the pic

Probably less to do with the post, and more to do with your 'position' on it.

Raise your bars (or buy a higher 'rise').

    It won't make a difference.

Think about getting a bike fitting session. My back hurt and I eventually solved it by sliding my saddle back about 1/2 an inch.

"Those" Moots posts aren't all that great – I'm only 75kg and the saddle kept ending up pointing at the sky. Not impressive for a £200 part.

I have an Airborne Ti post on my Tinbred and my riding buddies have seen the movement in it, so it does defo add some spring/comfort to the ride. I certainly think it is worth it myself. Only cost about £70 at the time, so not really that much more than a Thomson or whatever.
As an alternative to Gee, my saddle has never once moved in about 5 years of using it and having used about 3 different saddles with it (The Airborne being the same design as the Moots).

I definitely noticed a difference in comfort with my Moots, and have never had any issues with the saddle moving (would be surprised, the clamp pieces are gripped almost 360degrees by serrated clamps…).

Do yourself a favour though and make sure your seat tube is nice and tidy and your seatclamp is a good one, I bent my post early doors because of a cheap clamp 'biting' it over the top of the tube 😥

If you really have a bad back, try an ugly thudbuster.

Without knowing your back problem I can't say, probably a good idea to see if there is something wrong with your back. Maybe good set up will help, maybe a bit of stretching before and after will help. That said, I've got the Airborne one on a Pipedrean Sirius and I love it. Enough to say that I don't really see the point of buying a FS bike.

Some Ti posts will make a slight difference but it won't cure a bad back unless it's very very mild.

With something like a Soul which has a reasonably skinny post (27.2 IIRC), most posts will flex if there's enough sticking out. Ti may flex a bit more but not to the extent that it'll be like suspension.

Funily enough I get a sore back if my saddle is too far back on the rails.

I now mark my rails because I find that over time my saddles do seem to creep back in the seatpost clamp a bit.

That's the best seatpost in the world.

…The problem I experienced was that the 2 halves of the wraparound clamp were too close to each other when it came to doing it up – so you could never do it up tight enough and when given a belt in a race tended to move. I prefer 2 bolt style ones like the Thomson, Salsa or Easton – a little heavier, but 100% reliable. I've seen too many of the silly light ones (MSC, KCNC) snap at the clamp. Remember to finish first, first you must finish…

Another thumbs up for the Airborne Ti post. I assume Van Nic still do the same…

Ti post wont make much difference unless you have a fair bit of posat sticking out of the frame though.

No wonder your back hurts if you are trying to get the seat post to flex.

    Is that image appropriate?

I hope that seatpost has no sharp edges.

Cheers for all the info and that lovely pic!
I currently run a Thomson 410 with layback as found an inline made the Soul (17.5 inch with 80mm stem) feel a little short. I'll go back to an inline again before I try anything else.
