It just looks 'wrong'? Surely feels like a spare tyre round your back? Apart from protecting your kidneys and keeping your back 'airy' what other benefits are there?

Surely the weight low down swings more with your hips? I.e. more noticeable?

They are so much more comfy, you hardly know your wearing them,( im fat too). i used to like riding with a bumbag tho and wingnuts are just posh bumbags, since getting a wingnut or 2 actually, ive been selling my camelbaks, also if you do go for one try the osprey hydroform reservoir (2ltr) its the bolloks,

they make a lot of sense, i used to use a waist worn camelback thingy and liked it
a good rucksack puts nearly all the weight onto your hips anyway, the shoulder straps are for stability. Camelbacks don't do this at all, all the weight is on the shoulders which is not good.

Riding with a pack on gives me a very achey (and sweaty) back. Do these solve it?

I've got an Ergon BD1 which works on similar principles and sits very low on the hips only with a ball pivot arrangement for the shoulder straps which work really well. The weight doesn't shift about on your back and the pivot keeps your back from getting too sweaty - I tried Deuter Airflow before and this is heads and tails better IMO.
Well made but a little on the pricey side though mine has gone too and from work daily through rain and shine and is still going strong..

Yes, they certainly help. The back thing is a big + IMO. Very well made too, materials top notch sail cloth and well designed.

Ok, Im sold on the idea. Thing is, can I utilise my current (almost new 3lt Camelbak reservoir?). The wingnut Hyper 2.5 mention's a 'square' bladder. A 3 or Ergon BD1 should solve this/be ok?

Question though- the Wingnut 3- visually looks like its creeping towards the edge of a traditional backpack? Its principles (i.e. weight) are firmly on the hips/low down?)

guessing the hyper 3 will take the bladder, ive got the adventure which is a bit bigger and def takes my camelbak 3ltr bladder.

My 2.5 is more than adequate in volume for general daily use. It does struggle to accomodate a 2ltr Camelback bladder tho due to it's compact size.
Anyone know where i can get a square bladder from 2 Ltr (ish)? The best i have found is a 'Source* widepac but this is a bit too long but will fold over.

camelback used to do a wide bladder with the 'out' bit at the bottom of the long edge. not sure if they still do

The Hyper 3.0 takes a normal 3-litre reservoir no problem. Very light, very stable, very comfortable - sits low on the hips - and the big wing pockets at the side are great for carrying food, trail tools etc. My original once started coming apart at the belt/pocket seam, but was replaced under warranty. New one is doing fine so far.
Another option that does a similar sort of low-slung gig is the Hagløfs Ace.

i have one of these is spot on. once its on my back i can hardly feel the weight. Bladder is not as easy to fill as a camel back but it spreads the weight nicely round my lower back stroke waist

excellent packs. straightforward capacity comparison doesn't do them justice either, as it's much more useable space. my hawg always used to seem full, even when it wasn't.

All sounds very interesting. I've been tempted for a while. So what baller does work well in the 2.5 wingnut or should I just replace my MULE with a Wingnut 3?

I use the osprey 2ltr bladder in mine, it comes with handy magnet to attach to the sternum strap and a magnet on the mouthpiece, which is nice, the bladder also has a rigid plastic frame around it. It is a very good fit too.

my mate is a runner - swears by inov-8 kit ... his packs had its zip replaced 3 times. ..
my 6 year old blowfish which is used as much if not more than his is fine ...
i am looking to buy a wingnut adventure but the 130 quid price tag puts me off a little but having looked at and had a shot of stus wingnut im convinced they are much better made than the inov-8 kit which seems to orientate its self on being the light side of durable - very thin materials and small zips used ! but its light !

. Thats what sells it to me. The lighter it feels the better IMO.Plus when you are running (assumption here) you sometimes tug at the zips to gain entry on the move?
Whereas on a bike you tend to reach whilst spinning along smoothly?
Thats a big assumption mind!...
