What's that about then? Surely comments help with site popularity on google and by limiting comments your also reducing views to the products that have been sent in by the advertisers.
I can kind of see it but it does seem a bit odd to me.

I'm more likely to cancel my subscription (as there's very little worth reading in the mag) than spend an extra £2 a month to be abused by a bunch of middle aged IT professionals with keyboard warrior tendencies....

It's anyone who generates over 1 page of posting history per week (>1ppw).
Special dispensation is made for those members on sabatical in areas of limited internet connectivity and there is a minimum membership period of a month before you can be entered into the 'league'.
