    One thing that doesn’t seem clear either is is this an “as well as 1×11” or “instead of”.

    Only about £650 for cassette, shifter, chain and mech. Bargain, obviously it’ll be sold for less than retail but think I’ll get xt for under £200

    Im going to say sram have made it just different enough that it wont play with rhe 11 speed stuff. Maybe im cynical but its not in their interest to make anything backwards compatible.

    Reading the article, slightly different chain widths so unlikely to be backward compatible. I hope they apply the new tech. to 1by11 rather than ditching 11sp

    SRAM insists that these alterations in design and manufacture will add ‘3 to 4 times more durability to chains, chain rings and cassettes’

    So £75 per normal cassette life, without the hassle of poring over the internet to find free postage every 6 months.

    I thought SRAM had been pretty decent with compatibility, 1:1 pull ratio on lots of their stuff, road, cross and mtb.

    12 might be a touch too far to stick with the same ratio.

    Edit: clearly talking out of my arse. Been better than shimano, though

    If that cassette genuinely lasts 3 to 4 times longer than a Shimano one in Peak District grit and mud, I’ll eat whatever remains of it.

    Haha, you can never tell on here.

    I was just thinking yesterday while riding 10sp Shimano with a 40t expander, that I didn’t feel any great need to upgrade it. Functionally it’s so close to 11sp XT.

    It’s certainly not the bit of my bike that’s holding me back the most. More likely to spend money on better suspension first.

    I know the RRP figures are not representative of what we will actually be able to get this for, but I’m still a bit suprised by some of the costs, especially the chain!

    having said all that, top end kit is top end kit, and it will be cheaper than that in real life and I can appreciate it for what it is. Still way above my pay grade though 🙂

    They may have pushed this further than I need. I’m really happy with my 11-42 ten speed expander set up but think 10-42 eleven speed would be absolutely perfect when it comes time to replace it all. With 10-50 I may have ratios I never get to use.

    The best thing about this is that it’ll make 10sp stuff even cheaper.

    Seems only last week (because it was) some bright spark announced and expander ring for XT 11sp that made it 10-50 and everyone (well every on Pinkbike) threw their head back and laughed about the idea of a 50t first – but here we are.

    As cack-handed as I am, I still think I only need 5 gears, 6 at a push – I could live with 10-42 in 6 gears.

    I’ve never gone for 11 speed as the range didn’t seem big enough for my liking.
    But this could tempt me. Need to head to Sheldon’s gear site to do some calcs.

    You could say that about lots of kit to be fair. 2-3 grand carbon frames without downtube protector are not uncommon frinstance.
