Was driving my wife in her GTi yesterday and the car in front was lurching a bit in traffic – she said ‘they’re not doing smooth gear changes’

I mentioned the 2-4-6 thread and said it was amazing the sort of things that got discussed on here and maybe someone was experimenting (http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/using-only-gears-2-4-and-6-in-a-car-ok-or-not)

She said “Well you can’t do that in my car!”
Me “Why not?”
“It’s only got 5 gears”
“Errm, look at the gear stick.”
“It says 6.”
“Yes”
“What’s 6 for then? 5 is the go fast gear”
“6 is go fasterer or use less fuel”
“Well I’ve never used it”
“Give it a go next time you’re on an open road”
“ok”

3 years she’s had that car 🙁

My brother had a Golf for almost 18 months, before finding out it had air-con.

He only found out it had air-con because he was moaning at me about how long it takes the screen to clear.
I told him to just flick the a/c on & press the ‘windscreen’ button. After 5 mins of:
‘but my car doesn’t have air-con’
‘yes it does’
to-ing & fro-ing, we went outside to his car & I pointed out the button with AC written on it, amongst the ventilation controls.

He exclaimed, “but, I’ve never needed to press that button” or something equally ridiculous.

It was a Limited edition Golf Match; the ‘limited edition’ bits were metallic paint, alloys & air-con & I seem to remember were what swayed him to buy the car at the time. 😆

Time to buy her an automatic?

To be fair mine has 6 … but I never use 6th as at 70-75 the fuel consumption seems to be better in 5th. Maybe I need to go faster?!
