I’ve still been taking a load of Ibuprofen and just riding anyway.

A mate of a certain age did that. Couldn’t ride for 3 months.

Just as a a PSA and an update: compression knee Warner’s are presently in Aldi at the princely sum of a fiver. Spotted by Mrs Binners yesterday, who got me a pair. I think I’m going to christen them on the commute tomorrow

Thanks again for all the advice

I’ve just had a MRI on my knee awaiting results and have first physio appointment in a week. But I’ve heard talk of hoovering it out (obviously the medical term) are you able to carry on as normal after this or is there a recovery period. Mine is down to a lot of kneeling at work and football on hard astro turf. I’m only 28 so quite worrying really. But seems I should be keeping them warm whilst out.

Had a troublesome left knee from 16 year old. Torn my ACL twice, torn Lateral and medial ligament this year, fractured tibial plateau once, fibula this year. Had medial meniscus tear and washout in August and have now got a discoid meniscus tear and Osteochondritis disscans which is being repaired on the 21st.

It’s had a Hard life my left knee. Most of it from trauma but the discoid meniscus I was born with but have torn it through falling whilst hobbling about on crutches when I broke my fibula earlier this year. Hopefully be back on the bike and fit next year. The right knee is perfectly fine though. And feels exactly how a 28 year old knee should feel. The left however has been in constant pain this year.

Starts off aching, the starts to lock and buckle under me.

I most certainly wouldn’t man up.

    That’s a given 😀

Specific leg strengthening exercises can work. You might need to see a specialist to find out what works best for your particular injury though. I was recommended leg curls to strengthen the muscles around the knees, which in turn pulls the kneecap away from the tender bits. Cycling also helps as does wearing trendy long johns.

One of the upsides of living in Norn Iron is that our knee guys are some of the best in the world. Where else would you hear the phrase ‘You’ll be going home with your knees in a Spar beg!’ 😆

As the great Baz Luhrmann once said, “Look after your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone”

@binners – didn’t see this thread before. @jaymod’s post is a very good one, I’ve spent quite a lot of time with physios and knee surgeon this year.

I now have two dodgy knees, broke ACL in my left knee 30 years ago and last year did same / worse in right knee. Excuse blunt instrument approach but pain is a warning sign, body saying stop doing this and get better/treatment. If its primarily a winter problem then I’d agree with knee warmers, it’s hardly news that older folk prefer warmer climates and your knee is prematurely old due to accumulated injuries. (so move South 😉 ) A visit to a specialist and an MRI scan would be worthwhile, then you have to make a decision, knee surgery is complex and the joint is a difficult one for the doctors and surgeons. I’ve been suggested ACL replacement (cutting out some of your hamstring and sticking it in your knee) plus meniscus surgery (cutting away, they cannot add/repair) but with a likely 24 month recovery at my age (50) I’m focusing on the stuff in @jaymod’s post
