  • The confusing world of Cigarette Cards – Any good websites for values?

    Afternoon all,

Myself and my partner have been asked to go through my Grandfathers Cigarette Card collection, and find a way to sell/dispose..

He has around 10,000 of them, so its a pretty big job. And I’m expecting 99% of them to be worth very little, however i’m sure the odd one will be worth something.

Does anybody know if any good websites we can use to reference and find out a vague value?

We have the same job for around 15,000 stamps as well. But that might have to wait!

    Cheers all,
    J

I know it’s a lot of cards but….sort them by brand; then into sets as complete sets will have more value than incomplete; then identify and contact the brand owner; consolidation of the market now means there are only a few brand owners.
Talk with their archivists as they may have an interest in complete sets.
Online research into cigarette card collectors; some may be missing a few to complete a set; some might be interested in viewing/making an offer for some or all.
Any specialist auctioneers? Talk to local aucton house and ask them.
    Good luck.

    frankconway –

Thanks for the advice, that’s the route I was looking to take. But wondered about any smaller websites, or online value guides I could follow to get an idea.

Had our first look through them this evening, and we have found over 150 full sets which he was mounted and framed himself. Turns out he never displayed them anywhere, but just wanted to keep them in order and looking pretty.
Then we have around 3000 extra cards which are just duplicates of the full sets he already has.

It really took us back actually, and he got a little emotional when showing us them..

    Thanks.

If you google ‘cigarette card collectors’ there are a small number of specialist auction houses who would probably offer some rough guidance on value – but they will qualify this with comments about condition etc.

Imperial Tobacco based in Bristol will have an archivist – they are the parent company for the Wills, Players and Ogdens brands.

My dad worked for Wills and I’m an ex Imps employee so have a bit more than a passing interest.

Do you have a set of ‘Passing Clouds’ cards in the collection as I always thought that was a great name for a cigarette brand?
