someone tell me this is not ahppening….

I’ve got home today, (bin day) to find me freshly emptied wheelie bin with a letter in it from my local authorities Place directiorATE whatever the **** that is!
    It says, and I quote…

When we emptied you bin today we noticed that it contained some loose ash or dust (i.e. th sweepings from my garage floor, about quarter of a dust pan full),
Recently some problems have come to light with regards to loose ash/dust in refuse bins. When ash is placed loose into wheeled bins it can cuase problems during emptying. The grit gets into the mechanism on the back of the vehicle and causes accelreated wear and teaR.
tHE LOOSE ASH AND DUST can also blow out of the back of the vehicle during emptying which can cover the crew and anyone esle standing about in ash or dust …..blah blah etc etc.

WTF is that about???? Refuse is dirty shocker!!

So not content with making me sort out unrecyclable stuff and pretnending its going to be recycled as opposed to getting sent to some 3rd world country for so called”sorting”, and not content with closing half the **** recycling places and then complaining about the rise in fly tipping, now I’m not a;llowed to put anything dirty in my binFFS

Didn’t they used to be called Ash Carts ?

turn your bin upside down, look for the RFID component (a big round bit) and hack it to bits and remove all identifying marks. fill with ash as much as you like.

I read the quote you provided, you should get straight on to them. Their use of inappropriate capital letters is disgusting.

    WTF is that about?

WTF do you think it’s about? Seems a perfectly reasonable letter to me.

You’ve not followed the rules and you can’t be bothered to take simple steps to help out your fellow man and neighbour, and you want sympathy?

And the operators used to be called dustmen which proves?

OMG, this thread makes me sad, the responses seem terribly PC. What happens when the recycling bins are emptied sans black bags?
What? dust! Run, run away & spare yourselves!

FFS, go clean a public toilet or something to see how bad ‘menial’ jobs can be 🙁

Take a shit on the handle lol, don’t think they will bother about dust then lol

Further quote from the same letter

“I know you may not have been aware of this problem before as we have not previously included this information in our list (ever growing)of do’s and don’ts for the waste recycling service”

    Genius!

I HAVE THE RIGHT TO FILL LOW PAID WORKERS’ LUNGS WITH DUST THAT MIGHT HARM THEIR LUNGS!

That’s what I’m reading here, right?

    BermBandit
    Free Member

Nope, a) they’re not low paid. The people in McDonalds might be but these guys are not low paid as manual workers go, and b), if they have not thought through the kit they issue to me, (wheelie bin), and themselves (cart for collecting said bin), that is actually their employers issue not mine.

Jeez, they asked nicely enough. How long does it take to pour the stuff into a paper bag?

I would call £400-£500 a week low pay would you?
I throw all sorts in the bottom of my bin and they’ve never said a thing.
Probably just some jobs worth tosser.

No that it matters, here’s the first three I’ve found on a quick search:

    https://jobsearch.direct.gov.uk/GetJob.aspx?JobID=1648709 – Minimum wage.
    http://www.placingpeoplebedford.co.uk/jobseekers/job-info.php?job_id=1224 – Minimum wage.
    https://jobsearch.direct.gov.uk/GetJob.aspx?JobID=1557187 – Minimum wage.

    £400-500 a week? I strongly doubt it.

But anyway, it shouldn’t matter. If there’s a problem with dust flying around, affecting machinery, and the council figure there’s a financial or safety reason to ask nicely, then that’s all good. Just bag it up. I bet plenty of people chuck all sorts of rancid stuff into bins, loose. Cat litter, metal shavings, whatever. They don’t have time to work out whether it’s a bit of floor sweepings or something worse, they’ve breathed it in already. Just be polite and chuck it in a paper bag.

So im not allowed to empty the cat litter tray straight into the wheelie bin then ? 😆

Wheelie bins are great you can bung all the stuff you cant be bothered to sort for recycling or they wont take at the tip ,car tyres, asbestos ,gearboxes,

I’m guessing a bit here, but in them good old days when wheely bins were called dust bins and dusty waggons collected them, were a similar time to when we all thought asbestos cladding was a great idea. Asbestos use is now banned as it kills (or the dust from this can cause issues which can kill), in a very similar manner any Sharpe edged dust can cause damage to your lungs. For what its worth, this is called progress, we try to prevent unnecessary harm to our workforce, no matter how badly they are paid.

I got a pair of tires put back besde my bins once….. Picked them up and put them in the bottom

I get all mannor of hassle when i go to tip in the van so avoid it as much as possible.

Wonder wht happens when they empty my bin full of grass……

We do how ever take our recycling to the tip once a month in the jeep.

It’s a largely shitty job that doesn’t pay well, the Council are trying to make conditions better for their workforce and reduce their maintenance costs. What a bunch of bastards eh.

I’ve been getting rid of my low grade nuclear stock pile by putting it bit by bit in with the cat’s litter and ash from the fire. Saved approximately £14billion so far on decommissioning costs….

I’m confused, was this your recycling or general waste bin?

If its the former, then anything other than what’s on the list is a no-no. If its the latter, then I don’t understand – does that mean I’ve to bag every bit of dog 5hit and the like?

Mines being emptied in the next half hr or so, I’d say it’s got at least 4 ash pans from the fire in it.
Never have they moaned over the last 3/4 yrs about it, sometimes it has a good dose of sawdust in there too from chopping wood. That’ll teach them for not putting the bin back from where they got it 😈

Damages the machinery, utter dribble. The whole point of wheelie bins is they keep the waste disposal operative (dustman) away from the waste, unless there is a lot of dust I can’t see much of it getting anywhere near the men at the back.

There’s still councils out there doing black bag collections, now that is a danger to the dustmen, broken glass, splits bags overstuffed with nappies, bags full of soil……..

Can’t see them being able to stop the dust in bins.

The staff that run the bins have to work at an incredible pace for my council, it’s well known to be one of he hardest jobs to do, they certainly don’t get paid a fortune for what they do!

I covered the bins for a week once and found the pace they worked at hard to keep up!

Ski the glad to be a parks gardener 😉

Just bag the dust as they ask and thank your lucky self that you don’t have to do their job.

(Edit) btw £8 per hour is the starting rate round here for the bins!

Ok, so lets get a few things clear here.

    1) It’s the General waste bin, which I’ve had for about 20 years now without issue, so if dust in the mechanism is in fact the issue its taken a good while to figure it out, and if its dust on the workforce then they really ought to be reviewing their H & S practices after all this time.
    2) What we are talking about here is emptying a small amount of floor sweepings into the bin, of which a proportion will have been dust, but by no means all.
    3) It joins a long list of thou shalt nots, which include such things no empty paint tins, these have to be taken to the tip, to a specialised disposal area, which hasn’t existed for 4 years now, so if you buy paint you cannot dispose of it, or its empty container.
    4) Regarding wages, I’ve not mentioned where I live or what authority it is, so I’m not sure what other people elsewhere are paid has to do with it. Here it is relatively well paid as unskilled manual jobs go.
    5) At the tip, you are not deemed to have waste if your vehicle is over 1.72m high, they are barriered off and they consider you to be trade.
    6) If you manage to sneak in you are exposed to bin police arguing over what your waste is and where it should go. So for example I tried to dispose of a broken broom head with red nylon bristles, I had to too and fro between the plastics bin, the wood bin and the general waste bin as the attendant at each told me it went in the other.
    7) You’re not allowed to bin more than two “bags” of diy waste….. mind you I had them when I rolled up with it in two 1 tonne grab lorry sand bags 🙂
8.) You may not dispose of plaster board or coving… apparently that does not exist as waste os its nto a problem.

Etc etc ad infinitum……. And then they are complaining about the rise in fly tipping the twunts

Personally, I reckon its some 9 year old fresh out of uni without enough to do!

Which council is this? A mate of mine and I recently put an entire lathe an plaster ceiling into his wheelie bin along with all the old crap that had accumulated on the top of it and some render for good measure. No complaints there, just an empty bin.

It was a perfectly civil and reasonable request, and putting your dust into a bag is hardly an inconvenience.

cant they wear a dust mask? converse to this, a mate was doing up her house, she bunged the blokes £20 and every two weeks for 2 months they took everything in the back yard, old plaster, a bath chopped in half, rubble, all sorts…
