All this kind of chat reminds me of a story that has always resonated for me. One of my friends at school, her mother was jewish had come over from Europe with her family before the holocaust. This may be one of those stories, but she told me that 500,000 jews had applied to come to New Zealand from Europe in the years leading up to WW2, and we had taken 5000.
Not that we could have taken that many, but still.
Anyway my point is that as a first world developed country we should be helping others. People don't abandon their own country and families because they don't like the weather.
My follow up point is that a lot of what contributed to the fact that we are a first world developed was Colonialism and the British Empire, and a lot of the problems in Africa etc can be reasonably linked to the events surrounding that.
(and sorry for mentioning Israel, I may have done so by accident, but I think I got away with it)

So what are you going to do with those recent British citizens that fall on hard times, but haven't been here long enough to earn housing?

Help them out with their rent in the private housing. That way they are well looked after, and people who have been British citizens for longer can have the benefit of cheaper social housing. Is that so unfair?

You'll have to help me burst my middle-class bubble here, but isn't the idea of council houses that the council is the landlord so they can charge a reasonable rent which is taken from housing benefit - so the money effectively stays in the system?
Surely if people are in privately rented places then they'd need far more assistance with rent and the money would be leaving the system and going straight to private landlords?
Also I'm pretty sure people would then complain that the immigrants were getting nice posh private rented places while they were stuck in a council sinkhole.

I tend to need housing most about tea time onwards so perhaps to be safe we should say that some one who has no home and intends to stay should have been in the country for 12 hours before we try and take them off the streets.
Despite a high number of homeless people cluttering up the streets and making the country untidy we do actually have more accommodation/houses than people. No need to Que jump just a need to utilize empty properties.
My surname clearly indicates my family immigrated around 1066 and were particularly unpleasant to the settled population at the time. At least we can claim that great great great etc granddad was only obeying orders.

You don't need to be on any benefit to have a council house. Dependant on your local council the amount of housing benefit you can get varies with income.
Lets say the maximum housing benefit you can get is £300 per month. That is £300 towards your rent in private housing. That rent may be £450 per month. You need to pay the difference. Say that is for a 2 bed flat.
A 2 bed flat from the council will only cost £280 per month to rent. You have to pay nothing.
Obviously if you dont get any housing benefit the cost differnce matters just as much.

bobbyg81: right that was pretty much as I understood it. So that means if they pay for folk to be in private rented accommodation then it costs the council more money long term than if they give them council houses? (paying £300pm to a private landlord versus £280pm to themselves).

It's not about being better for the council. It is about being better for the British citizen. Wherever they may have been born. British citizen for 2 years? I think you should get the house over someone who has been a British citizen for 1 month. I can't really see how that is unfair? Perfect? Far from it.

Its all academic anyway. Given the Tories latest wheeze, council houses will be dimly remembered anachronism before too long anyway. And knowing them, my tents suggestion will presently be being batted about in Steve Hilton's Blue-Sky-Ball-Endery dept.

As a (sometime) archaeologist, I'd like to post up a vid of meself on the tube, ranting about (1) what we now call the UK was first settled by humans nearly a million years ago (2) that, as modern humans, we ALL came from Africa (albeit probably with a bit of inter-breeding with in situ hominin populations, e.g. Neanderthals in Western Europe) (3) that things like skin colour are environmental adaptations, for fug's sake (4) and most of all... that anything that made this country great is largely the result of us being a tolerant, utterly mongrel (think: successive waves of invaders...) heinz 57 island nation.
But I generally mumble, so it wouldn't be very exciting to look at.
