    ….but I could do with a quick answer.

    Essentially, is there a reliable fit-and-forget way to tension a chain on a bike with usual geared dropouts, or does it involve a significant degree of compromise?

    Been using the on-one thing for ages on my commuter with not even a hint of trouble. Simple but ideal. You could always hack up an old rear mech to achieve the same thing.
