All that goes in a little saddlebag on my bike, bottle in cage and my back doesn’t sweat. Big days (remote, winter) I will have a camelback with little fleece, tights, more food, few more spares(mech hanger, a cable, tyre repair, gaffer tape, zip ties etc. Don’t forget chain tool and SRAM powerlinks.

Edit: forgot compass and whistle which live in pouch on bag strap, map if away from local woods.

Is it time for this one again?

    Water, tube, pump.
    Maybe multitool.

Not the extraneous gubbins that seems to be the norm, because I’m just riding a bike.

In addition to what you have listed:-

chain tool (if not on multi-tool) and power link.

    whistle.

brake pads if it’s going to be an long wet one in the peaks.

    2 or 3 zip ties.

    bike phone.

    in winter, a survival blanket.

Sharp knife and a tack (for getting stubborn thorns out)

    spare contact lenses
Never thought about that – but then you’d need some:

Wet wipes. Useful for cleaning up hands, but someone once needed to use mine when he got dog pooh over his saddle.

I prefer the all or nothing approach. I have two camelbaks, one for juice only and one for longer rides…the longer rides pack (which gets used the most) has inside:

    Multitool
    Spare tube
    Shock pump
    Normal pump
    Very small first aid kit
    Few powerlinks
    QR skewer
    Buff
    Brake pads
    Zip ties
    Gear cable
    Snacks
    Money

I always have with me, in different dry bags

    Bag #1
    Chain tool
    Crank pre-load plastic tool
    Puncture kit
    Glueless patches
    Weldite tubeless tyre repair kit
    Cable ties
Toothpaste tubes cut in half (work well for tyre boots)
    Tyre levers
    Powerlinks
Couple of wet wipes – go through a dog turd at speed once and you’ll understand
Spare gear cable, spare tyre valve with plastic tool to unscrew

    Bag #2
At least 1 spare inner tube, 2 if I’m out somewhere especially rocky (took 2 up snowdon)

    Bag#3
    Fodder

I always have my multitool and pump (lezyne mini track thing) loose in my camelsack

Looks like an awful lot like that but it doesn’t add up to much. Although I’m hopefully getting a bike with bottle cage mounts soon and am going to try just going out with a bottle and multitool for local rides. I bet it’ll feel amazing not having a pack on.
