Category A -A vehicle which should have been totally crushed, including all its spare parts.
Category B - A vehicle from which spare parts may be salvaged, but the bodyshell should have been crushed and the car should never return to the road.
Category C - An extensively damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.
Category D - A damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.
Category F - A vehicle damaged by fire, which the insurer has decided not to repair.
Theft - These vehicles have not been recovered and ownership rests with the insurer who made the total loss payment. They are able to repossess the car as soon as it is identified, even if it has been bought innocently

Depends on the car I suppose. If you want a particular car and its more than you can afford its a handly way to get that car a bit cheaper HOWEVER it depends a lot on what was damaged and how it was repaired. I suppose I might buy a damaged car and take it to a garage I could trust to fix it up PROPERLY. But do you know that a car thats been fixed by someone else has been done properly/safely?
It might be just a couple of panels and plastic bits that write it off financially, but sometimes small bits of damage can hide damge to important bits...

Or in non technical terms
Basicaly D is an older car thats been bumped and a new bumper is £500 which isnt worth it against the value of the car. Or it could be a new car thats been put through a hedge and needs every body pannel replacing and a respray, again uneconomical. You could drive a cat D in most cases.
C is the same, but more damage, think of cars that have had a shunt at a junction. your probably best using it for a lot of spares rather than getting it back on the road.
B - car is propperly written off, but there may be something salvegable.
A - The accident looked like something out of Final Destination

jist of it seems to be - get it cheep - run it into the ground - buy
if you think youll be selling it - dont unless its silly cheap ....

I wouldn't personally touch one, having seen on several car forums over the years the trouble that people have when it comes to sell.
If you are buying a Cat D it needs to be cheap as chips and get insurance quotes because it'll cost more to insure and some won't offer
