I've got an M761 "Mega 9" front mech that I've tried fitting to my 26/36/46 setup but to get the back plate to clear the middle ring when shifting means the front plate ends up way too far above the big ring.
Has anyone got an equivalent with a shallower back plate?
The one I have is only one ride old. 34.9 clamp.

I do not have a mech to swap, but I do understand the problem first hand.
I have a 20 / 32 / 42 set-up and found exactly your problem.
More research proved Shimano claim you need 12T difference for middle-large to work properly with an M761.
I solved it with an FD-M510 mech which works perfectly.
I am sure someone would offer you a straight swap....
