Firstly, I hope you don’t mind me posting this here. I have been using the forum for a while and have posted on several occasions before!

I am currently in the process of writing my undergraduate thesis at Aberystwyth University. Within this I am exploring the feasibility of successfully implementing sustainability measures within today’s capitalist society. With particular reference to the oil and petroleum industry which provides the main case study of the work. One important element of the project entails the collection of primary data, which is where this post comes in!

I have created a short questionnaire that is available at the link below. It contains just 10 questions that will give aid in addressing public opinions regarding the topic in hand and in turn provide help in answering the primary question. It should only take a maximum of 5 minutes to complete, and any responses would be hugely appreciated.

If you have any other questions or wish to know more, please feel free to email me on the address in my profile and I will respond as quickly as possible.

Kind regards and thanks in advance,

    Dan

P.S. As a side note, I am also searching for people with experiences that are reflected in the project outline above for short interviews. If this is something you would possibly consider please get in touch and I will be more than happy to provide you with more information.

email in profile is probably the best way to contact, sampsondrj@aol.com.
Apologies, I should have repeated that again in the ‘P.s’! Look forward to hearing from you.

Unlimited growth(capitalism) in a finite world is a bit of an oxymoron, it can only go on for so long. Sustainability is only possible if you’re talking in short or specific time periods.

I am a geologist, turned business analyst, turned data manager, turned service coordinator in IS – all across service companies, consultants and oil companies. So yup, I know a lot of the shore-based industry. PM if you have any questions, am happy to help.

Thanks to all of you who have answered, some great comments as well!

Following up on one question/advice posted on the survey:

Within the thesis, whilst I am exploring many different views on sustainability the definition I am applying essentially follows the notion of: ‘development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’, presented in the Brundtland report (1987).

As for Capitalism, I understand there is a finite period of time that this can occur for, I am largely concentrating on the period covering the next 50 to 100 years. There was unfortunately a limited space available in the questionnaire to detail specifics, and I was also weary that responses would likely decline if it proved too ‘text heavy’.

It’s called recycling, if we did it well enough and found some new synthetic materials to work with then I don’t see why we couldn’t have sustainable growth.

That’s without offloading our mining and heavy industry off the planet as well. The resources within our solar system are so great that they may as well be infinite.

IMO the Malthusians are way wayyyyy too pessimistic about what we could achieve if we put our minds to it.

Some interesting answers, I’ll post them up in a few days if anyone is interested. Currently answers and comments are very much split by opinions at far ends of the spectrum it seems. Thanks again chaps:)

Have completed the questionnaire and will be interested to see some of the answers you share.
What course are you doing? I’m studying Business Management, specialising in Sustainable Business so sounds like we’re looking at similar subjects.

Mark. The degree is human geography however have also taken multiple business and politics modules. My dissertation idea sounds like it falls very closely to your studies, i’m hoping to tie in a section on how the management of businesses could address goals of sustainability.

Done, but I forgot to mention the petrodollar, which serves as a direct and worrying link between global capitalism, the petroleum industry and the military industrial media complex.
