  • Suggestions for cycling jerseys that don't look like a Star Trek costume?

Are there any normal looking tops out there?

Something without the MAMIL/FMIL, wannabe TdF look for people that would like to look like “someone riding a bike”, but still want the benefits of wicking technical material and a longer tail over a cotton t-shirt. Mainly for commuting, pub rides, family pootles etc.

    Want:

    – lightweight, wicking material that dries quickly after rain or getting all sweaty
    – front zip or some other way to adjust ventilation
    – machine washable at 40°
    – casual styling but still bike cut
    – durable

    Don’t want:

    – neon / high viz
    – shiny
    – sponsors logos
    – big pockets at the back
    – radio pocket
    – skin tight

Pretty much any running top then.

I’m guessing they don’t have a cycling cut though?
(i.e. longer tail to prevent builders bum and wider in shoulders for handlebars posture)

    Quite a few do,

    Craft Hybrid Jersey,
    Couple of salomon ones.

Its going to be hard to find a top that is a cycling top but pretending to be something else.

Endura do a whole range of jerseys which you might find ok.

Decathlon have some looser cut cycling tops with pockets on the side: http://www.decathlon.co.uk/C-11007-shirts

Not massively stylish, but the logo is usually fairly discrete, and assuming you go a couple of sizes up they’re not that skin tight.

I like the gore ones and they are on sale now. Plain colours, relaxed but not loose fit, long backs, discreet and usual gore quality. Tired of road biking with a billboard on my bike and tired of amusing ones.

Whackjob shirts ftw. I regularly ride in their normal “trail tee” but the new proper cut jersey is great (although not on their site yet). We had some custom shirts done by them for twentyFour12 (check us out here). Drop them a mail and ask about the jerseys they are very friendly.

Now that you’ve come up with the idea don’t just leave it.

I would happily go for a ‘original series’ blue star trek top in a cycling cut.

Let me know when you go into production.

    Cheers Shep, will try them.

Yeah, Endura stuff is a bit more muted. Used to have a bad rep for durability/quality though – is that still an issue?

These kinds of things are just about right:

Thanks all – some good suggestions to look through there.

I really like Gore stuff. My current commute favourite is Gore and is pretty much what started this hunt (as it is getting a bit old) – it is soft (not nylonny/polyester feeling), casualish, and muted.

But the current range.. this is the most acceptable I could find:

and it is still a bit

    Ground Effect?
Great merino, but with the exchange rate currently (NZ$), not cheap.

I recently got a dare2b one that’s pretty much what you describe; wicking, zip, cycling cut at the back, one colour so not really Star Trek…
