  • Suddenly can't access one website – Help

    We've suddenly lost the ability to connect to Pamperedchef.com at home (no other sites seem affected). Seems to be router or network (ISP) related (talktalk). I can access it fine from work and can access the site from my iPhone as long as I switch the wifi off and connect vis 2G. I've tried using different DNS servers and playing around with the MTU settings on both the router and Vista (Home premium). We're running IE 8 but safari won't connect either on the iPhone via wifi. We've also tried connecting from other PCs in the house, one running Vista Home and the other running XP home, no joy, just won't connect. It was all annoying fine yesterday.

    Any ideas, I'm stumped and so far everything Google has suggested hasn't helped.

    If sites change servers, don't the internets take a while to re-index (or whatever) ?

    Maybe but I can still access it from different networks / ISPs and I've tried a different domain name server which should connect if talktalk hasn't updated it's lists. I'm really at the limit of my knowledge on this.

    @jonk

    not that I'm aware of.

    Ah missus has just told me the PC & laptop both downloaded automatic Windows updates today (XP & Vista) 🙄 . Work PC won't have done and obviously neither will my iPhone. It's the only thing that's changed since yesterday.

    stumpy do a system restore………or goto windows/system32/drivers/etc

    open the host file with notepad and see if there is anything within there relating to the site you can't access mate.

    let me know your findings.

    routing problem with your ISP? You've tried different DNS servers, so it's not merely a propagation issue.

    FWIW we're fairly regularly finding routing errors with our ISP…

    Not a hosts file/firewall/windows update issue, otherwise your iPhone wouldn't be affected

    Just tried a system restore, still didn't work. Another thought just hit me, can't be the windows update, my iPhone doesn't run windows! and that won't connect to the site via my router either. Gotta be a router or talktalk problem. Wife's just nipped across to one of our neighbours who are also on talktalk (and have the same Netgear router) to see if they can connect.

    I hates bl**dy computers.

    edit retro83 I realised that just as you were posting.

    Now thats a weird one.

    I can browse to the URL and it loads: http://www.pamperedchef.com/

    The IP address resolves to 12.158.13.203 using O2's DNS server. I cannot however browse or ping the ip address. Using googles DNS sever (8.8.8.8) even gives the same result.

    If I do a whois I see that the domain was registered by http://www.cscglobal.com, but even if I use thier DNS server (PDNS1.CSCDNS.NET) I get the same result. It looks like the DNS record was updated on the 19th of march so its not like thier hosting ran out.

    The only thing I can think of is that they have changed hosting / provider and the DNS change needs to propagate, however I dont know why I can browse to the domain name and not the IP address it resolves to. Weird.

    Maybe just see what the chat is tomorrow with it?

    FWIW, I can connect to http://www.pameredchef.com, but *not* to http://pamperedchef.com.

    Might be worth clearing your cache as well (if they've changed their networking, and also got their cache timeouts up the spout it would help).

    Using Richard Branson's DNS, http://www.pamperedchef.com has address 67.206.83.46, whereas host pamperedchef.com has address 12.158.13.203.

    The 67.xxxx address seems to work fine for HTTP and ICMP (ping). The 12.xxx address is dead.

    I get the same IP using my router software to identify the IP, think I'm using the open DNS servers.

    Wife's back, neighbour can't connect either so at least it's not my hardware. Looks like pampered chef or talktalk have stuffed up.

    Thanks for everyones help, tis very much appreciated. Problem is still not resolved but I feel a whole lot better knowing it's definitely not something I've done.

    I can't ping or access it via the 67.xx IP address either, I think it's all pointing to Pampered chef have done something and various ISP's taking time to catch up.
