  • STW blocked by BT Parental Controls

I got home today to find my BT hub not working. Since I rebooted it the forum is blocked by the parental controls! I’ve asked BT to explain why! This happened to anyone else?

Maybe because of the ad network that STW uses, they might be labelled as known to serve pornographic ads to applicable websites, but who knows.

But more to the point – this is why it’s important to oppose the Digital Economy Bill – the one that gives the Government power to block websites, because generic dragnets never work.

Tor browser will get you past all the parental controls.
If you’re not sure how to set up tor, ask your kids…

Used to chuckle at previous work where Pinkbike was blocked for adult content.

Is it because people write the word ****?

So after spending ages looking for my BT account details the problem has fixed its self without me doing anything. Maybe it was a dodgy ad, I opted out of anything targeted so I’d be surprised if it was just me getting it though.

I’ve always been very distrusting of filtering after the firewall of a company I worked at blocked our own website!

Probably blocked because we are all a bunch of childish berks. 😀

That’s interesting, when I pressed post on my last message (written on laptop), it went to the blocked page notification. But writing this on my phone over Wifi works fine!

My BT Internet has been causing issues the last few days, just refusing to open pages, giving “…server not responding” messages, etc, and it wouldn’t allow me to download TV’s programmes either, so I’ve been tethering my pad to my phone to get around it, intending to sort it when I had an early finish, but I checked tonight and it seems to be working just fine.
    Go figure, as they say.

Not sure about BT, but I find that if I use OpenDNS (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220) or Google DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) as my DNS servers most nonsense from Sky Broadband stops – this is the stuff where some websites just don’t load but you don’t get the message saying it is specifically blocked.

I also use PIA on my phone and personal laptop; like Tor that stops all the nonesense, but then means you usually have an IP address blacklisted by Netflix and Amazon prime video etc.

The whole thing is mostly nonsensical as 5 minutes googling tells your teenagers how to get around most of the generic blocks.

Ironically I live close enough to see Claire Perry MP’s constituency from my window!

Thanks for the input, hopefully it’ll sort itself out.
