Ever notice how after you’ve just bought something online you get one million (google?) adverts for similar products?

My business idea is to create a service that tells the advertisers “he’s just bought that shit so…like…don’t try to sell him more of it…yeah?”*

Am I about to become a millionaire?**

    *Yes, that is my strapline.
**Yes, I have patented this thread.

Exploiting the well known phenomenon that people why buy a particular thing are the least likely to buy a similar thing in the future? Genius.

Amazon are the worst at this.

“You’ve just bought a pair of headphones, so how about a pair of headphones”

    Erm…cheers.

Wow, good arrogance, even for you. Try thinking before posting.

Talking of silly advertising, the current Halfords ad for their headlamp bulb replacement service on the radio is based on repeatedly telling us not to touch the bulb that you’re removing because it’s hot. Thus exaggerating the difficulty of changing a bulb.
But if a bulb has blown and needs replacing, surely it won’t be hot when you take it out?

It’s based on what you look at I think, not necessarily what you actually buy.
I’m constantly being reminded about what I am tempted to buy and have been looking at.

What’s annoying is that you could be searching for a gift for someone, and should they use the same computer, they’re quite likely to see what you were thinking of getting them.
This could spoil the surprise, or land you in trouble if the thing is a bit shit…

Hey easy now. Its not some rubbish algorithm behind these targeted ads. Its my mum. Any xmas or birthday the present she’ll get me will be pretty much the last thing she saw me buy.

That’s what incognito mode is for.

    Well, that and porn.

You’re not the only person to have thought that. Though I did consider that some bulbs have dual filaments in them (eg tail/brake).

Incognito mode is creepy. Don’t like a little spy with a magnifying glass watching me whack off.

They’d need a magnifying glass to see you whack off?
    My sympathies…

Yeah, but I find the fusion of jazz/funk particularly apt for the viewing material.

That’s the least of your worries. MI5 are probably watching you whack it, via your webcam.

Has anyone ever seen one single useful advert on the internet though?

Whetever advertising idea you come up with will be ignored.

There is a simple way to not get any adverts – but I can’t tell you or STW will ban me 🙁

Why would they ban you for advocating buying a digital sub for £10?

If that works for the whole of the internet, it’s an even bigger bargain.

Cos that’s not what I was talking about – you’re trying to get me to say ********* aren’t you?

    I hear it does!*

*Warning it doesn’t. I am not liable for a singletrackworld digital subscription not stopping adverts on the rest of the internet.

They supposedly put a lot of effort into those targetted ads. However Amazon aren’t even clever enough to figure out that if I am searching for Olympus fit lenses I probably am not interested in Canon stuff. So I don’t think they’ve put enough effort in yet.

OMG THIS! AAARRRGH! Every time I hear it on the radio, it makes me cringe. It’s changing a bulb, not installing a bloody flux capacitor. They’ve been running those sorts of ads for the past few years though, they had one trying to convince people that changing wiper blades was an impossible task for mere mortals…

current Halfords ad … on the radio

    A digital watch?

I don’t think radio adverts use the same targeting algorithms.

Id prefer to change a flux capacitor than another lightbulb on my wifes Chelsea Tractor.

Mrs Toast – I missed the wiper blade fitting ads! Even I fit my own wiper blades!
The bulb replacement service is “from only £6.99”. I bet if they had to change my headlamp bulbs, which involves removing the wheels, they’d charge even more than that!

Careful when changing old wipers. Make sure you give the old set a a chance to cool down.

There’s no way I’m changing the bulbs on my Renault, even the owner’s manual says you should take it into a garage to get it done.

And they’re specialists, probably have special hot-bulb gloves, too.

You lot underestimate how utterly inept a lot of people are. Wipers are too difficult for many.

That. And, judging by all the “my tyres are too tight for my rims” and “my HTII BB only lasted three rides” threads we read, a lot of those folk are probably on this forum.
