They're an effing PITA to build. They need a tool to put the eyelet in. Order this at the same time as the rims, unless, of course you want the post office to loose the tool, so you're left waiting for a few days to do a 10 minute job…You have to tension them on the nipple…this is also a PITA…They do need longer nipples..also order these at the same time…(there's a pattern emerging, no?)

    I shouldn't be allowed to do this really… 😳

Oh, and great translation on the UST instructions…I'm told to: Abundantly moisten the bottom of the rim… 😯

Right, tyres on next then, if you can hearing swearing, that'll be me…

Not being funny but didn't you expect some faff?

They need a tool to put the eyelet in

I got away without it for 3 pairs.

You have to tension them on the nipple

What do you mean? I tensioned them in the normal way.

    They do need longer nipples

I got away without it for 2 pairs (and yes ordered longer nipples for 3rd!)

They should seal on ust tyres well. Otherwise B&Q door sealant in the well of the rim helps a lot. Great rims, beefy and not too heavy.

Alternativly get one of the popular bike shops to build them and they'll probably come out cheaper. tyres are a pain though, i had to cut a wire bead once to get it on 819

    to get it on?

You must have been using good sealant if it held air…

Tyres aren't a pain on UST rims, you just need to know how to fit a tyre!

Agree with the other things though, 16mm nips do make things far easier!

Oh, and ordering 16mm nipples from the cute 18 yo sales girl at the bike shop is embarrassing.

    "I need some long..erm…nipples please…" 😳

I have a set of 819s and a seto of the predecessor X3.1's never had a problem building – thats what the LBS is for!

As for UST Tyres – they are much easier than the alternatives.

Well, proper UST go up a hell of a lot easier than regular tyres on rim strips…

    Time for a bit cake and a coffee… 8)

UST tyres go on no problem, but i once fitted a set of Conti Race King Supersonics (2.2iirc) to 819's, theres an hour and a half of my life i wont get back.

On a lesser note, 819's seem to be a breeze to inflate compared to Shimano UST offerings. (Not mentioning Stans as i beleive they have witchcraft built in, far too easy to set-up, bound to explode on me at some point).

Only problem i had was using the DT calculator, try going through the above PITA then realising the spokes are too long!

I've got none UST ADvantages on mine, built the rim bed up slightly with insulating tape to make them as tight as possible, faffed around a bit to get them on (using a track pump) but now they're perfect.

Yep I've found UST tyres on 819s dead easy to inflate compared to the same tyres on Shimano UST rims
