I have a pair of deore external bb type cranks in a black finish.

This winter has been harsh to them so in the spring I fancy stripping them back.

A brief test with nitromors didn’t touch the finish 😕

Would I be best dipping them in drain cleaner?

Any examples of similar experiments and results would be appreciated 🙂

    Cheers

    I suspect you’d melt the aluminium too…

they’d be better off being polished ‘clean’ (as you’ve found it’ll come off with some rubbing…)

Polish the anodising? Might take a while…….

I used caustic soda on my XT cranks, you need to be careful as it’s nasty stuff and be careful on the timing as it will keep going, I think it took about 20 minutes to do mine.

Caustic Soda – mix with cold water, dunk for about 10 minutes, and it will come straight off.

Or use a plastic brush attachment on a drill, that takes the finish off pretty quickly, but leaves the aluminium alone.

Then finish off with 800/1200 wet and dry.

There is lots of “Alloy wheel stripping” stuff on the web, I would imagine the process would be the same. Worth a look?

This is an XT crank after a quick blast on a polishing wheel…
if you’ve got access to one it’s the least effort.
