Looking at getting one of these but can i use it ok with a 32 tooth ring without the bash guard?

it's not designed to be run without the bash at all. the chain guides dont enclose the chain themselves, they use the bash as the outer edge to keep it enclosed, and thus on the chainring.
really not sure how well it would work without the bash.

It also says its for 32-36 teeth, how will it work with a 32 ring but a 36 tooth bash? surely the gap between the guides will be too large?
