What’s the easiest way of removing layers of uneven paint from stone lintels ?

A wire brush has removed the loose flaky stuff but still rough and more needs to come off.

Can you attach something to a drill or is it just a manual sand paper job ?

If it’s an oil-based paint you could try a hot air gun?

I think some is more modern waterbased, some older will be oil, probably some lead as its 100+ yrs old.

Probably nothing to lose with trying a hot air gun but don’t breathe the dust/fumes.

You could also try a needle scaler if that doesn’t work. Depends how soft the stone behind is

I used a needle gun to do this in my flat. cleaned the surface up but left it with a hammered finish

Pressure washer worked on our old ones, with some wire brush effort to finish in awkward corners.

Needle gun. Horrible things but it’ll do the job as long as you don’t want a dead smooth finish.

Also try wire brush in an angle grider. I did this to remove the old plaster from the chimney we’ve exposed. It creates a shed load of dust even with a vac hooked up to the grinder.
