1 extra gear for the price of a new chainring, cassette, chain, rear mech and shifter? I wouldn’t bother unless most of those parts are about to wear out.

If you’re replacing a few bits it’s worthwhile, especially as you can get a clutch style mech.

I think I’ve got another 8 to 12 months left, plus I’m running an X0 Redwin mech, X0 shifter, PC991 chain @ Redwin cassette, would cost a fortune to replace that!

I do fancy a clutch mech TBH but I don’t know if the expense of upgrading would be worth it?

Leave it until the nine speed cassette and chain are dead. You can modify some clutch mechs to work with 9-speed by adding a spacer to change the leverage ratio, so you could change the mech now and the rest once you’ve run it into the ground.

    That’s a thought?

I’ll see how long I get out of my current cassette/chain and ring and take it from there.
