Just popped to Co-op for lunch and saw the most ugly beast of a mountain bike / motorbike hybrid sat outside with its owner, which a quick google tells me is a Stealth B-52 (it is the least stealthy bike I have ever seen!). Never seen anything like it and I can’t for the life of me work out how it’s legal! Top speed of 50mph, looks like it’s designed for downhill but man is it ugly! Wouldn’t mind a go on it though…

What the hell happens if you put it on 50mph mode and then point yourself down some singletrack….?

    Death I suppose…

Legal as what? Are electric motorbikes illegal?

    Are electric motorbikes illegal?

no, as long as they have a registration number, type approval, mot etc.

a pedelec bicycle that does 50mph is not legal.

No, but there are limits on what you can ride on the roads relating to power and speed.

The grey area is pedal assisted bikes, and that ugly thing above (not you wwaswas) probably falls into that category even though I doubt the owner _ever_ pedals it.

A moped in all but name.

Nah, it’s either a too heavy e-bike, or an underpowered crosser.

If you want your off-road kicks battery powered, I reckon one of these is the way to go

no, as long as they have a registration number, type approval, mot etc.

And a license and crash helmet. At 5.2kW, I’d like to see what type of licence they’d need. I’d be surprised if a normal moped license would cut it.
