It’s our 20th wedding anniversary in Nov so planning on surprising Mrs A to a few days in Nice. Any recommendations of lovely places to stay, to eat and things to do?

    Thanks

Hop on the train to Cannes and stay there

We used to stay in the Hotel Windsor. But not for about 15 years. Walk the prom, eat some socca and pissaladiere. Take your bike(s) and enjoy the countryside! Used to love our visits but haven’t had an excuse to go back since.

the train ride along the coast into Italy is lovely, very scenic. it also stops at the town of Finale Ligure so you could take her out on an uplift day 😀

Lifer’s suggestion is actually a valid one, Cannes vs Nice. A few family members have summer places in Cannes which they find more sophisticated, better restaurants etc. How late in November, a lot if places may be shut ?

Visit Eze, lovely village. While you’re there you could visit La Chèvre d’Or’s restaurant (if you are utterly minted). Otherwise just wander round the maze-like streets, visit some art shop, go to the gardens at the top and admire the spectacular views.

Apparently George Clooney has a house in Eze, according to one of the locals when we were there.

We stayed in Beaulieu sur mer, just round the corner from Nice. Spent 10 days of our honeymoon there in 2008, can’t remember what hotel it was, Carlton or something like that?
Beautiful wee place, look it up on google earth.

Surprise her and go cycling. Col de la Madone is just north of Nice.

I’ve only been there once, but I preferred Cannes to Nice as well. The suggestion of taking the train into Italy is a good one – the train going along the coast from Genoa to Cannes is quite nice and much cheaper than trains in UK.

thanks all … Nice is the most likely destination (flights booked) but Cannes is very near so looking into that now – maybe split the trip?

Go for Coffee at the Cafe De Paris on Casino Sq in Monte Carlo.

All miles apart but hire a cheap car – Enjoy the riviera lifestyle.

Well, the obvious thing to do would be to arrive in Nice having done the Torino Nice Rally!

There’s also Café du Cycliste if you feel the need for a coffee surrounded by mostly road bike bling or to buy some rather tasteful cycling clothing.

Wander along the Promenade des Anglais. The old town is nice and there’s a regular market. The modern art museum in Nice is worth a visit and the Musee Matisse is close by. It’s worth having a wander around the port/castle too.
A number of smaller villages are minutes away by railway (Villefranche and Beaulieu). I really like the beach/cove at Cap D’Ail, just a bit further on, though it’s a while since I’ve been. Walk down the hill to the sea from the station; if you turn right it takes you to a nice bay. If you turn left there’s a path along the shore to Monaco.

Take the train to Monaco for the day – take afternoon tea in the Hotel de Paris, wander the streets and get a feel for how close those F1 drivers actually have to get to the walls.

As above – train to Monaco for the day.
I love it, but agree it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but worth a visit to make your own mind up.

We took the bus to Monaco, the coast roads it travels along are beautiful.

    Also recommend visiting Eze.

Dining in the old town is nice/Nice/nice (oh, suit yourselves) too.

Intersting suggestions which range from Facebook photoshoots to get-out-of-there.

I’ll second Pardisio’s day and add a boat trip locally or to St tropez

My wife is from Nice and I’ve had the good fortune to spend many a summer (and out of season trips) there. All suggestions above are great. Visiting Antibes, and Grasse are great too, as is Villfranche sur Mer -shouldnt be hoaching in November but the sea will be a little chilly. Eze as mentioned is stunning too. Monaco is worth visiting too (take the train not the bus- its quicker- bus is v cheap though about 1.5 euros for the 45 min trip) and the aquarium there is stunning- genuinely impressive. Try a Fenoccio ice cream in the old town btw.. even in November it will be awesome. The best ice cream I’ve ever had anyway. Bon Voyage! PM me if you want any insider info 🙂

I thought St Tropez was a bit of a dive, but each to their own.

I wouldn’t call St Tropez a dive, in the summer mentally busy yes, but not a dive.

If you are in Nice / Cannes, then a drive along the coast road to St Raphael / Frejus is great. Château de la Napoule just west of Cannes airport is worth a visit, nice views over the bay. And while I’ve not been there but the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild looks an interesting visit.

Aquarium in Monaco was my suggestion

Oh and walking round the Marina

I think I preferred Nice to Cannes

    Been twice before

Normally just get on a train and pick a random stop to get off and explore

Monaco because you have to, I found it rather pleasant for a day
    Antibe
    Cannes I thought was poor
    Matisse house is cool
Some of the old town restaurants are very good

We are going in October again so a timely thread, thanks for all the other recommends I wasn’t aware of
