I’m here for a few weeks with the family. Surfing our faces off and biking where possible (any locals know of any good routes ?)
The lad is now able to stand when surfing, well proud.

Any recommendations for things to do with 5,6 and 13 year old ?

Go and find some snakes in the dunes. Used to go there as a kid.
    Loved it!

Go to lee bay for snorkelling and rock pooling.
Go to South Fork in Braunton for one of their route maps.
Go to Squires for fish and chips.
    Where are you staying?

Head to Instow for quiet estuary walks and nature.

Lee is lovely, was SUPing there the other week. Don’t try and get there in a wide car with nice paintwork though!

I really wouldn’t want to be the Lee Bay bus driver!

    Tara Trail to Barnstaple.

Pop into the Salt Rock warehouse at the back of Tesco’s for cheap t-shirts/surf wear.

Braunton skate bowl at the back of the surf museum in Caen Street.

Pop around to Appledore you may get to see the Royal Marines practice with their “Toys” always an unusual sight to see them driving thru Braunton.

IIRC there’s a huge park in Barnstaple.

So much mis-information in one thread. 😯

    Its Saunton not Staunton.
It’s the Tarka (as in Tarka the Otter) trail not Tara.
I’ve never yet found a real bargain in Salt Rock.
And the Royal Marines play in the water at Instow.
+1 for Squires fish and chips or across the road to SQ (it’s run by the same family).

Go round to the next bay – Croyde – which has good surfing and rock pools.

    Walk to Baggy Point.

    Boat trip to Lundy Island

The Old Cream Shop in Croyde is worth a look for all of your cream tea / Ice Cream / Pasty needs.

I grew up in Braunton and the above shop is run by one of my school chums.

Obviously you haven’t looked in the right place, one hoodie, and two polo shirts for eighteen quid seemed reasonable arm. 8)

When looking out to sea at Croyde, go to the rocks on the right hand side and clamber all the way to the end.
There you’ll find the most massive rock pool you’ve ever seen and the kids will thank you forever.

I had an hour’s worth of good waves there last Tuesday. If it’s flat walk from Croyde round Bagggy Point, decent beach cafe in Putsborough plus there’s a more direct route back to Croyde. The Thatch has some decent ales on and the (expensive) ice cream shop is very good,

Been back a week. Thanks for all the info.
Never found any snakes but the Marines were there, gave my son a guided tour around one of their landing craft, he was so chuffed (as was I) Spent alot of time at Putsborough ?? surfing and even got some good snorkelling in.
Confirmed that Racing Ralph’s are not very good for sand dunes too

Glad you had a nice time.
I’m off to Croyde next month for some surfing and clotted cream scones for breakfast.

    I’d hate me too Squirrel.
Seems a bit late to go, but I went down on Halloween last year and had the best weather and solid surf I’ve ever had.
It really is a beautiful part of the country, and one I’ve been coming back to since I was a kid.
I’d sell up and move there in a flash if Mrs Squad agreed to it.
    She won’t though.

I’m keeping a very close eye on the surf forecast for Putsborough this weekend. After a great weekend of surfing 10 days ago I am desperate to get back down there. I might do a day run if the waves look good, it’s only 4 hours each way in the car.

I haven’t been there for 40 years. Time to re visit I think…

    Golf courses are good too

    and the bistro in Braunton

Is the bistro the big one on the crossroads?
Not tried it yet if it is.
The trouble with Braunton is that every time I go there I spend money.
Nearly bought a Yeti SB66c in Southfork one year.
Only went in for some Stans fluid.

The concrete path from the car park to the beach was laid for Lady Di and the war scenes in The Wall were filmed there.

The area around Croyde, Saunton, and Braunton is my second most favourite place in England. The Wife has decided which house we will buy if we win the lottery. It won’t be a question of if its for sale.

I’ve never yet found a real bargain in Salt Rock.

I bought an inflatable surf mat for £12. It was awesome. 😉

My Dad used to own the building that now houses the Salt Rock warehouse / factory from which he used to run a car body repair business.
