I only have a hilly 4 mile journey and use a 32/16 ratio on my MTB.

8 miles in london so flat, except for the mile or so at the home end (Crystal palace)
32:16 and spin.Posted 2 years ago # -
used to do 20miles on 44:14
now do 5 on 44:14

6 miles
42:16 on 700c fixedwheel.Posted 2 years ago # -
32 miles and 38:16 on 700c cyclocross tyres, bit spinney but there are the South Downs in my way....

48x18 road
32x16 xc
both 25 mile round trip and flat-ish
Did try 32x15 offroad when i had to bodge a drivechain and that was even better but no good for getting up proper hills the rest of the time.Posted 2 years ago # -
4 miles each way, 38:13 with legs of steel!
Bloody hell trail rat, major grinding for you then.

8 mile each way quite flat, 42x18 cyclocross bike/tyres. not sure how long it takes 'cos i've just started with this set up so i can bump/jump up and down curbs to get off the road, onto bike paths during the dark months. 42x17 would be better if its not really windy.

7 miles for me at 32:16 with knobblies. Downhill in the morning

I think it may also be helpful to introduce, what bike, wheels & tyre choice as 44:14 on a 700cc 25mm slicked road/track bike is helluva lot easier than on a 2.1" tyred MTB

Or quote it properly in inches please.

6 miles, 32:16 (gear of champions), but only when the gear bike is hors combat as it adds an extra 5 to ten minutes each way

I don't ride to work at the moment, but used to ride a short 3 mile ride uphill in Edinburgh on my rigid with hybrid tyres on 36:12. My route involved a couple of short steep climbs between flat bits. Good for the leg muscles!

32:13 for 8 miles on a 29er with 2.2 Jones ACX
Posted 2 years ago # -
Averaged about 20 miles per day for work purposes using 26" 36x14 - now switched to my road bike to take in longer routes now that my winter strength training is done.

20 mostly flat miles with a couple of short hills on 48:18
Normally takes about 1:20 think my best time last year was 1:08, doing it for the first time this year in the morning...

38 16 on 700c's (Pompino) along the Kennet and Avon towpath for 10 miles ish each way. Spin tastic but allowed some off road and proper hills when needed too.
36:16 on an MTB with knobblies used to be ok for an 8 mile commute that took in some bridleway but it did take a while to get in some mornings.

8 miles there, 36:14
Much longer way back, but still 36:14.Posted 2 years ago # -
84.9 inches
on a singlecross with pannier

32/16 on mountain bike with knobblies - mainly off road. I've never measured but probably around 8-9 miles.

42:16 - 3miles!

48x16 on a 700c pomp, 12.5 miles (it is very flat here).
Posted 2 years ago # -
36:17 on an old MTB with slicks. 12 miles each way.
Posted 2 years ago # -
48x18 on my pompino on the road. Hilly enough old commute. 36 mile round trip.
I had been finding it too spinny on the flats and downs and manageable on the ups so had been thinking of dropping to a 17 or 16 on the back to see how i got on but I couldnt get going this morning at all so may put it off a few weeks yet.
70.3"

17.5 miles each way on a 48:17 Specialized Langster (the cool first generation one when they fitted a proper gear rather than the poncy 42 they all come with now...)
Posted 2 years ago # -
Depending on my mood and the time I woke up, between 8 to 14 kms. On a road bike with fixed wheel and a 44:18.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I have just dabbled with 48x16 fixed on the singlecross, but found it lethal, so am going to 48x18 frewheel..
had been doing 42x18 but that was far too spinny for me.
hills of sheffield
(though my 2mile commute is fairly flat, I use the bike for a lot of riding out into the peaks etc...)

42:14 (78" gear because it's a 26" bike) 5 miles. 1.75" slicks
Posted 2 years ago # -
Midlothian to Edinburgh - couple of hills
9 miles each way
42:17 on 26" wheels
that's perfect for me - top of the last hill on the way home i'm at my absolute limit,Posted 2 years ago # -
15 very undulating miles each way
42:16 on 700cPosted 2 years ago # -
7 Miles London
48:15 fixed 700cPosted 2 years ago # -
10 miles in London.
42:16 on 700c.Posted 2 years ago # -
48:18 Pompino - going via road
32:16 Inbred - off road hilly
Daily 15 miles round trip (roughly the same distance for both routes)
Posted 2 years ago # -
38-14 on 26x1.5 slicks. The commute's only a mile but I do use the same bike for winter road training rides sometimes. Then it feels a bit spinny.
Posted 2 years ago # -
44:14, hardtail, 2.3 slicks, 4 miles
