i’ve bought a bike with 1×11 X1 sram direct mount 32t chainring x-sync (cassette 10-42t)
and i’m considering a smaller chainring ideally 28t/30t so as to have a lower gear.

I have a lot of climbs regular over 1000m and prefer to spin in lower gears to get up hills, than strain on a higher gear.

choice seems limited for a 28T chainring , has anyone done it, and what did you buy

how have people found loosing the lower gears, I’m happy with a
24/36 = 0.66 lowest gear on my 29er hardtail, but that would mean a 28T chainring on the 42T biggest cassette cog

I’ve an Absolute Black oval 30T on my 29er, so a 28T one of them?

Did you really mean 1000m climbs, or that you regularly climb 1000m (in a ride)?

most of my rides are around 2500ft of ascent overall. I’ve got a 32T oval and never found myself wanting for lower. why not consider a 30T oval if you like to spin. Id imagine a 28T would be bloody miserable from losing the bigger ratios

SRAM do a steel one for £15 too. Finish isnt nearly as good as the WT but hey… its £15!

Ben’s right, I forgot about those. Steel chainring for that money is a no-brainer unless you’re on a carbon feather bike.

AFAIK there’s only aftermarket 1 DM steel ring and thats 28T 6mm offset.
