CRC have some e-type UN52s on for a song. I dont need e-type as such, just a 68mm shell (Im assuming axle is the same for a given 113mm spec)

Assuming e-type are designed to have the lip of the drive side cup 2.5mm further away from the BB shell to allow for the e-type mech mounting plate, then can I use an e-type BB with a spacer with no problems?

after a fair bit of googling, I have found someone who had the same idea…and it doesnt look good:

In a typically spendthrift fashion I believed I could just put 2.5mm of spacers onto the UN52E BB to replace the mech mount, but it appears the axle is offset inside the housing (aligned on a 68mm shell), thus the crank spider began to touch the BB shell as I tightened the crank on. I didn’t tighten any further, just took them off; Middleburn recommend 113mm axle for the RS7/8, can anyone confirm that a 68*113mm BB will fit these correctly and get the chainline on target? Which brings me onto the front mech woes…

So will ditch that idea as Im also using middleburn cranks and I know the spider lockring can already get quite close tot he cups as it is.

You can bodge it a bit, I’ve used E-type with ISIS bottom brackets and just bought a BB with a slighter longer axle (118 rather than 113 I think). The cranks are offset by 2.5mm on each side, but it worked fine.

hadnt thought of that. being off centre isnt a bother – good idea though…

EDIT: Bugger. only go up to 113mm anyway 🙁
