I am planning on building some new rims onto my Hope hubs. This is something I have done before on another bike but this time I want to buy new spokes and Im having a little difficulty deciding what length to get.
Im buying some DT Swiss E 540s to lace to my hope pro 2 hubs (32 hole, conventional not straight pull)
I have used the DT Swiss spoke calculator which gives me spoke lengths of….
    Front Left = 258.6
    Front Right =260.2
    Rear Left = 259.9
    Rear Right =258.9
DT Swiss do the following relevant spoke sizes……
    • 258 Silver or Black for 26″ MTB
    • 260 Silver or Black for 26″ MTB

Given that spokes come in packs of 36 and are stupidly expensive – which ones should I buy?
What sort of tolerances can I get away with?

    Thanks
    Nick

Given the time of year I should really have made it a more spooky tale.
thanks for the advice – just a couple more questions….

Last time I built wheels I used the original spokes from a factory built wheel which had thread lock on the threads – Is it a good idea to use thread lock or is it an unnecessary hassle?

Also should I buy colour co-ordinated nipples or will this make me a massive gay?

I would put a bit of 3in1 on them, not spoke lock, tbh. I’ve never had spokes loosen but you do need to make sure they don’t seize.

black or silver brass nipples, not alloy.
