Speeding fine – sent off cheque but it hasn't been cashed – what next?
-
johndohFree Member
So – 3 weeks ago I paid a speeding fine. Sent off a cheque along with both parts of my driving licence but it hasn’t been cashed.
I am unable to get through to anyone at the force (North Yorkshire) to discuss it so I was wondering – has this happened to anyone else? What next (assuming it is lost and I now have no driving licence).
wingnutsFull MemberSince its lost forget about it and …….. get someone to take your points. I suggest your wife as you obviously have a strong, honest and faithful relationship.
dashedFree MemberHere’s a crazy idea… Why don’t you give them a call and see if they’ve received it yet and how long they’re taking to process and return licences.
Just a thought like…
santacruzsiFree Memberdashed….thought the OP said he’d been unable to get through to anyone at the force, so presume as a result he is unable to check 😆
johndohFree MemberThank you – at least one person read my OP.
Dashed – feel free to find a number for N Yorks Police that allows me to reach the department I need.
glupton1976Free MemberMaybe they just pay cheques in once a month, and havent got to that date yet.
johndohFree MemberPossibly yes. Would be good to know though – but the website (and trying to get through to anyone) is shocking. Just thought I’d ask to see if anyone else had experienced similar.
At the moment I can imagine I will have to re-apply for my licence (which will no doubt be at a cost) then have threatening letters from the police running concurrently as I try to sort it out, eventually increasing my fine.
Why didn’t I send it Recorded?
nealgloverFree MemberThere are police stations all over the place.
Why not go into one of them and ask ?johndohFree MemberNeal – that will be my next move. I had kind of assumed I could reach someone on a phone though, silly old me.
dashedFree MemberYou could always try here: The Rozzers – there’s even a list of all the departments you can get through to here – must be someone from that huge list who can help you… Plus there are email and postal contacts. Or as previously suggested, pop into your local Police station. I suspect they deal with mountains of speeding fines and won’t be banking cheques on a daily basis.

Maybe they just pay cheques in once a month, and havent got to that date yet.No way, they cash them the same day, It sounds like your license and the cheque has been lost.
The only way to find out for sure tho is to contact them and heed the lesson of sending an official document by “standard” post.
johndohFree MemberDashed – seriously, I dare you to try.
Option one is to make a report (not relevant)
Option three is to ask for a custody suite (not relevant)
Option two is to speak to a department – so I read through this list:

York Police StationAnd have left phone messages at three of the departments that I *think* may be the one that can help. None have returned my calls and at no point have I been able to speak to someone.
If you wait for long enough without choosing an option they throw you to the switchboard (great I thought). But the ‘switchboard’ is the same automated message.
bigyinnFree MemberYou’ve not helped yourself by not sending such important documents recorded.
Doesn’t bode well…….
Good luck in trying to get hold of someone.johndohFree MemberYou’ve not helped yourself by not sending such important documents recorded.
I agree, but I didn’t really think to, given that it was just a standard envelope.
bigyinnFree MemberThe thing is you’ve now lost your driving documents, so you’re out of pocket for them too.
Anything like licences, birth certificates and passports should alwys be sent recorded. It wont stop them going missing, but it should save you some money trying to replace them!
Im not trying to be condecending, as you probably are fully aware now of the risks.
sounds like a fl;ipping nightmare getting things sorted. Since when has it been so hard to give people money? 🙂johndohFree MemberUpdate…
I left three messages on the answerphone for Road Policing Group Harrogate (because no-one picked up when I rang) and they eventually rang back last night. Except it was a Constable from Scarborough – just 50 or so miles away. He had no idea what to do and wasn’t able to give me a name, address or phone number of the correct department. But said he’d email someone that *should* be able to help and they would call back this morning. That didn’t happen. He also suggested it might be best to just wait for the threatening letter to come through and pick it up then.
Useless.
bren2709Full MemberDo you still have your NOP on this there should be contact details.
Think the department you need will be Central Ticket Office, they deal with all speeding tickets issued.jock-muttleyFull MemberOdd to find a Police service actually administering fines… this is a job for the Courts Service.
Are you sure you had to send your documents & fine to the Police…. I always thought that fixed penalty notices were dealt with by HMCS i.e. the courts service.
Could be wrong..
ScapegoatFull MemberYou don’t send your licence off to the police, you send it to the Courts Service here in West Yorks, as they do the administration and add the penalties. I expect it’s the same in N Yorks.
BigJohnFull MemberIf you go past a speed camera well over the limit you’ll get another NOP so you can find the address where you sent the last one to. Copy this post and send it in as a valid reason for not being prosecuted for the second speeding.
ScapegoatFull MemberA bit of digging reveals that N Yorks fines are handled by HMCS in Leeds. (regional service) 0113 037 6600 select option 4 to speak with an operator.

Yeah that’s correct – I sent it to a Leeds address. Thanks for that – I looked and couldn’t find anything so just tried to speak to the police as a first course of action.
johndohFree MemberWell that was useful – cheers. I got to speak to someone and it turns out they have moved over to a new system and they are massively behind with processing payments and they have a big pile of unopened correspondence – they think it will be mid-next week before it even gets onto the system.
So fingers crossed it turns up and faffage is avoided.
Cheers Scapegoat 🙂
