Ok, this is for a friend….

He’s decided to go for this bike:

    http://www.specialized.com/gb/gb/bikes/archive/2014/rockhopper/rockhopper-comp-29#geometry

    from http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/rockhopper-comp-29er-2014-mountain-bike-ec052283

He is 6’2″, judging by the Evans size guide: http://images.evanscycles.com/product_document/file/d9d/654/b30/2598/specialized-2014-bike-sizing-guide.pdf he’s bang on the border of a Large 19″ or a Extra Large 21″ frame.

Any sizing tips or experiences from owner riders?

Is he new/unfit, or more exprerienced/fit? The fitter I am the more I prefer longer bikes as it takes a lot of core strength to be comfortable on them. Whereas a newbie/less experienced rider would probably rather the shorter bike both for comfort and handling (and wont be going fast enough to benefit from the longer wheelbase).

I’m 179cm, so right on the Specialized M/L boundary (32″-ish inside leg, normal-ish arms, slightly poor flexibility).

I have a L (19″) Crave, and it fits well. Feels good to ride (not at all barge-like) and riding small sizes feels a bit cramped.

The top-tube feels high when standing on the ground, but I’ve never had any problem bashing my bits during planned or unplanned dismounts.

Worth mentioning that the latest Specialized hardtails all have quite short stems, so comparisons with other makes frame geometry may not quite make sense.

I’d say XL, but he needs to sit on it to be sure!

Can he wait until the Noahs sale/firework day?

The Specialzed boys are bringing down their demo fleet.

He has sat on a large, which he said felt ok, but not an XL.

IIRC Evans will get both sizes in for him to compare side by side, no?

Noahs would be good as LBS, they’re willing to offer a discount on 2015 models, but can’t do it on 0% finance, which he needs (it’s a completing uni treat).

    I’m 6ft2 and would choose a 19″ everyday over a 21″ as a default starter….. That said I currently ride a 20″ Voodoo 😕
