    Hi,

I'm going to visit the Alhambra and would be interested to know what other highlights people have found tucked away in the area, and which can be reached by foot? We may stay at somewhere like joy-riders for a couple of days riding but the main focus is on hiking. Has anyone done this/can recommend walking routes and other hightlights in the area?

    Cheers.

I've done quite a bit of walking in the Sierra de Huetor Natural Reserve which is north east of Granada smack next to the A92 motorway.
The tourist info centre was excellent on providing walking routes and there is also a good cafe in the park.
The info centre is called Puerto Lobo and the park is about 20kms from Granada and is signed from the A92 towards Almeria.
Its an interesting area with trenches left from the civil war and lots of small villages.

If you can, try to learn a few phrases and words in Spanish. There is a good chance that a lot of routes or trails are not mapped. There could also be a good chance that you could meet a local who knows the area inside out. If you can ask and understand what they say, you could find quite a few walks and also where safe fresh water can be found.

There are ordinance survey type of maps but they aren't very good and miss quite a lot out. Also google earth can be quite handy for a starting point.
